Daily grades reflect each student’s participation, preparation, and attitude during rehearsal. Points are earned by:
Bringing all required materials (instrument, music, pencil, binder).
Actively participating and following directions.
Demonstrating proper rehearsal etiquette and effort.
Missing materials, lack of participation, or disruptive behavior may result in a deduction. These grades encourage consistency and responsibility — essential habits for successful musicianship.
Practice logs are due every Monday and track each student’s weekly at‑home practice.
To earn full credit, students must complete the required minutes for their band class:
Beginner Band: 70 minutes per week
Symphonic Band: 105 minutes per week
Students may divide their practice time however they choose throughout the week, but the total must meet the requirement to receive a 100. Practice logs must be filled out completely and include a parent signature for verification.
Performances are a required part of the band curriculum at both the Middle School and High School levels. Students are expected to attend all concerts, contests, football games (HS), and special events unless an excused absence is approved in advance. Performances serve as major grades and reflect each student’s preparation, responsibility, and contribution to the ensemble. Missing a performance without prior communication may result in a significant grade deduction.
Chair tests are used to evaluate each student’s musical growth and determine seating within their section. Tests may include scales, prepared music, sight‑reading, or excerpts from concert literature.
Middle School: Chair tests help reinforce fundamentals and encourage consistent practice habits.
High School: Chair tests determine part assignments, ensemble placement, and readiness for UIL and other performances.
Students are encouraged to prepare thoroughly and demonstrate their best musicianship during each assessment.
