The Move sells for $149 on Timex.com, which puts it in competition with dozens of other trackers; however, the closest in terms of style and philosophy is the Withings Activit Steel ($129-229 depending on model). I have not reviewed one myself, but from what I have seen, they share a similar dial layout, track similar functions, and employ similar control apps. The two watches may use different movements, but the commonalities are such that I wonder if the same chipset might be at work.

The watch uses the Timex proprietary iQ+ movement with Bluetooth connectivity that links to an app on your Apple or Android smartphone and allows you to program activity goals, either by selecting one their three pre-sets or by tailoring your own by number of steps, distance walked, calories burned, and hours of sleep. You download and open the app, fill in some basic identifying information, and then press and hold the crown for a few seconds until it beeps to initiate pairing and set up. The first time takes several minutes. Subsequent syncs are well under a minute.

Hand-wound (manual) movements are the oldest of movements and date back centuries. The crown of the watch is manually wound by hand each day to power the mechanism that moves the hands. The movement is comprised of gears, wheels and springs housed within the watch case.

Mechanical watches (both hand-wind and mechanical) are admired for their craftsmanship and artistry. One notable feature is the sweeping motion of the second hand which moves multiple times per second versus a quartz movement where the second hand moves only once per second.

Mechanical movements are less accurate at timekeeping than quartz movements and depending on the make of mechanical movement can lose or gain up to a few seconds every day. Furthermore, given the intricacy of the mechanical movement itself, they are also more costly than their quartz counterparts.

These are battery-powered movements versus mechanical power. The quartz crystal in the movement is powered via an electrical current from a battery. Quartz movements are very reliable at keeping time and may only lose a few seconds a month compared to several minutes of a mechanical movement. Despite being more accurate than their mechanical counterparts, quartz movements are less expensive and only require a battery change every couple of years if properly maintained.

I am super excited about this move. I cannot wait to see a multi sport option. As of now, I am using the Polar V800. Its a cool watch but feel its still missing features. Its like they packaged a $200 watch and inflated the cost to $500. I am an employee of Att and am excited about the partnership with Timex in the Fitness segment. thanks for reviewing the product. AS usual, you come through with great reviews. Continue the great work.

This thing is nothing more than a glorified pebble. Everyone on timex engineering staff should be fired. Consider that pebble has been out for 3 years and garmin has put out several generations of smart watches before this thing is even on the market. Note to Timex why bother in the spring no one will buy this POS. this thing is a Run Trainer 2.loser.

One interesting choice that I think we can all appreciate is Timex's decision to place a synthetic ruby above the six o'clock hour marker. The choice might seem to be a rather rudimentary decoration at first, but it's actually a hint at the mechanical movement inside. Instead of typing out unnecessary text on the dial surface, the inset ruby lets you know this is a different breed of Timex than you might be used to seeing.

The S1 38mm addresses that. It utilizes a lightly brushed finish that, if you squint, looks just like a traditional, delicate Swiss Ctes de Genve decoration. I'm sure it's done by machine, and if you look too closely, the illusion disappears, but the overall aesthetic holds up. It's genuinely one of the nicer attempts at movement decoration that I've seen on a mass-produced watch for under $500.
