Currently, my career goal is to do something in the dental field. I have had this goal for myself since elementary school as dentistry has been something that has always peaked my interest. I chose my career goals based on my passion and how I can make a good income for myself and my future family. During my senior year of high school, I took a dental vocational class where we learned a wide array of things in the dental field and I was always at the top of my class. I really enjoyed learning about these things and we even got to work in eachohter’s mouths doing basic things such as identifying oral anatomy or learning to use suctions. I found myself very passionate about what I was doing and I really enjoyed the environment. This past summer, I also got a job working in a dental office as a sterilization technician. Being in the office made me excited to come to work everyday and I was even able to stand in and observe some procedures. I am extremely fortunate to have my passion also be something that I am good at.
I am positive that I want to work in the dental field but I am unsure if I would like to pursue the doctoral side of things or the hygiene side. There is a difference between the administration of the care between the dentist and hygienist. The dental hygienist is more involved with the patients and the education aspect of how to maintain good oral hygiene whereas the dentist is less involved with the patients and really only interacts with them for a short amount of time but is more involved with the treatment for the patients. My strengths definitely do apply to both of these career paths as I am an outgoing person who loves the company of others and I also love to educate and take the lead on things. This type of personality is necessary for the healthcare field, specifically dental field because there is so much one on one patient interaction every single day within the office.
With the rest of my time at IUPUI, I plan to shadow at dental offices and hopefully gain connections within the dental school.
