I am a current sophomore at IUPUI. I am working towards completing my degree in biology on a pre-dental track. I chose my degree because I am fascinated with science and many of the classes required for the degree coencide with the prerequisite classes requred to apply for dental school.
In a group setting, I feel as though I am a natural born leader. While I do feel as if I am a leader, I know how to take direction and give up some power when I am not in charge. I enjoy working in group setting whether that be taking direction or giving it and I feel as though when working in a group I am able to provide my best collaborative efforts to achieve the best outcome for the scenario.
My freshman year of college I was accepted into the Freshman Apprenticeship Program here at IUPUI. Through this program, I was able to work in another research laboratory under Dr. James Marrs observing and tending to his zebra fish. Working in this lab gave me exposure to what instruments, machenery, and experiments were used and done in a research setting. It helped familarize me with the enviornment and made me comfortable when going into my LHSI site. In this site, I did not have to interact much with a team unless it was just to ask questions about what they needed done. I was not able to conduct any research through this program, only assist around the lab where necessary and help prepare. This gave me the opportunity to start developing some independent working skills.
Over this past summer, I was fortunate enough to find a job as a steriliztion technician at Munster Distinctive Dentistry. Here I was able to gain skills in an actual dental setting that may not be directly applicable to me yet but will be very soon. Some of the things that I learned that I can use now are how to keep an aseptic environment and how to improve my collaborative working skills. Working in this environment made me accustomed to thriving in a fast paced environment and multi tasking. These have helped me tremendously thus far within my LHSI internship as I am always having to multitask. Both of these job opportunities have taught me valuable skills that I am able to bring with me to LHSI and excell at my research.
