While studying the functions of nonprofits and processes for grants in my grant writing course, I was inspired to add a scholarship component to the original mission of Rising Violet. Due to the teachings and culture (especially for my generation) within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, many women, including myself, felt cultural expectations and pressure to be stay-at-home mothers. Although my husband and I clearly “chose” for me to stay home with our children, we made the choice without any expectations to consider other options. As such, many women rely entirely upon their husbands for financial security, but due to death or divorce later find they are unable to provide for themselves or their family. The scholarship Rising Violet will offer is exclusively for mothers returning to school after an extended absence, or for business expenses towards greater self-reliance.
The scholarship will not be exclusive to women within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Although this nonprofit isn't directly related to my desire to increase the visibility of women within the Church, it is connected to cultural expectations, traditions, and opinions within the Church that often impede women from feeling the freedom and support to pursue their own desires.
