Tiddley Cove Morris first began under the (somewhat regrettable) name 'The Captain's Ladies' in November 1986, at Expo 86. Soon afterwards in 1988, we changed our name to Tiddley Cove Morris, after cartoonist Len Morris' fictional parody of a hoity-toity West Vancouver neighbourhood.
In the first years, we grew from two dancers plus a fiddler to a much larger group of dancers and musicians, dancing Cotswold Morris from Bampton, Headington, and Bledington. In the mid-1990s, Tiddley Cove added longsword dancing and an offshoot rapper team, Kit’s Point Sword, and later Steel Phoenix Sword. We later took up new dance traditions from Betty Lupton's Ladle Laikers as well as our own Tiddley Cove tradition of original tunes and choreography. We now dance Cotswold (largely Adderbury tradition), Border and longsword along with Lupton's and Tiddley Cove traditions.
For nearly 40 years, we have danced the sun up on May Morning, celebrated the seasons, wassailed apple orchards, performed at events and festivals, and always welcomed new dancers, musicians and mummers to join us.
Tiddley Cove welcomes new dancers, musicians, actors/ mummers, singers, and anyone who wants to connect with the countryside folk traditions that celebrate the seasons and our connections with the land and sky. You definitely don't have to be English or European, or an experienced dancer or musician -- everyone is welcome to our all-genders side. We teach and learn together, in a friendly and appreciative atmosphere. Come have fun, get some exercise, enjoy the cool dance and music traditions and make lifelong friends! You'll be connected to Morris groups and folk traditions around the world, and get to be part of a fascinating thousand year old tradition.
