Knowledge Discovery

Gathering information on different subjects, help to formulate hypotheses, questions, leads.

    • Cognition Search Wikipedia with WikipediaCognition semantic search engine (testing).

    • TextMine is for the Perl hacker who is grappling with the problems of managing unstructured text from various sources. You can use these text mining tools to search the Web, index text, extract entities, categorize your e-mail, and summarize documents (may be good, but demands some programing knowledge, not very user friendly).

    • Content Extractor is a professional data-mining software that organizes collected information for a convenient work. You can use it for a regular automatic data collection or extraction of any web content manually. The program is very accurate and collects data from pages associated with the specified source. It comes with a handy built-in browser and can save data in MS Excel .xml, .html and .csv formats (Not working well!).

    • Semantic Search Engine Leading provider of Natural Language Processing (NLP) software, including Semantic Search Engine, Text Analysis, Intelligent Desktop Search, Text Mining, Knowledge Discovery and Classification systems. Free, not experimented with, but seams promising !

Analysis and structuring

Extracting pertinent information from different sources, find answers to questions, verify hypotheses; Putting pertinent information within a structure, building a mindmap. Building knowledge.

    • GATE: General Architecture for Text Engineering or GATE is a Java software toolkit originally developed at the University of Sheffield since 1995 and now used worldwide by a wide community of scientists, companies, teachers and students for all sorts of natural language processing tasks, including information extraction in many languages (testing).

    • Protege: Protégé is a free, open source ontology editor and knowledge-base framework (testing). Protégé also offers a web-based collaborative tool for building ontologies. Interesting plugins for Protégé:

    • Wandora: Wandora is a general purpose knowledge extraction, management, and publishing application based on Topic Maps and Java. More precisely Wandora is an open source desktop application to build and manage topic maps. Wandora has graphical user interface, layered presentation of knowledge, several data storage options, rich data extraction, import and export capabilities, and open plug-in architecture. Wandora's license is GNU GPL. Wandora suits well for knowledge mashups. Wandora is capable to extract and convert various open data feeds to Topic Maps format (see image below). Beyond Topic Maps conversion this feature allows Wandora user to aggregate multidimensional knowledge bases where information from Flickr meets Geonames and Delicious, for example.

    • SCAN: (Smart Content Aggregation and Navigation) is a personal semantic content manager for desktop users. It combines search, text analysis, tagging and metadata functions to provide new user experience of desktop navigation and personal document management (testing).

    • WEFT QDA: is an easy-to-use tool to assist in the analysis of textual data such as interview transcripts, written texts and fieldnotes. It includes a number of fairly standard CAQDAS features

    • TAMS: Text Analysis Markup System (TAMS) is both a system of marking documents for qualitative analysis and a series of tools for mining information based on that syntax.

    • Transana: Transana is software for professional researchers who want to analyze digital video or audio data. Transana lets you analyze and manage your data in very sophisticated ways. Transcribe it, identify analytically interesting clips, assign keywords to clips, arrange and rearrange clips, create complex collections of interrelated clips, explore relationships between applied keywords, and share your analysis with colleagues. The result is a new way to focus on your data, and a new way to manage large collections of video and audio files and clips.

    • Free Mind: is a premier free mind-mapping software written in Java (testing).

    • DODDLE-OWL: is a domain ontology development tool for the Semantic Web. DODDLE-OWL makes reuse of existing ontologies and supports the semi-automatic construction of taxonomic and other relationships in domain ontologies from documents.

    • Ontologies: SUMO: a very large ontology, also available in OWL.

See the W3C site for more on the semantic web, and to find different ontologies

Presentation

Encapsulating knowledge in a mix of formats to be presented/transmitted.

    • Images and videos

      • ImageJ is a public domain Java image processing program (testing)

      • CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs). (testing)
