NJ Queen Snake Survey

A juvenile queen snake (Regina septemvittata) I found in northern Virginia.

Queen snakes (Regina septemvittata) are a medium-sized, aquatic snake species found in the eastern part of the United States. It is one of the few snake species that almost feeds exclusively on crayfishes. In New Jersey, R. septemvittata is listed as a state endangered wildlife. No confirmed sighting of this species has been reported since 1977. It is largely believed that R. septemvittata has been extirpated from New Jersey. However, recent years have witnessed several anecdotal reports of R. septemvittata sightings in central and southern New Jersey. So, I plan to conduct a survey in 2021 to confirm the presence/return of R. septemvittata in New Jersey as a side project.
