On November 30th, 2021, a student-organized walkout took place on the front lawn of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. The pattern that we noticed, having already attended one such walkout in our freshman year, made it clear that the issues that spurred the previous walkout leaders, still remained. This repetition of student demonstrations on the issue of sexual assault and misconduct within the school, prompted us to look into the legal precedent on the issue, leading us to Title IX.

In 1999, Aurelia Davis (left) brought forth the case on behalf of her fifth-grade daughter LaShonda Davis (right). Davis argued that the Monroe School District Board of Education acted with deliberate indifference to reports of sexual harassment between students within its school. Davis won the case, and by doing so set the precedent for school to be held responsible for student-on-student sexual harassment and assault under the federal civil rights law that is Title IX.
