Coach's Corner

I learned to swim early in my childhood at Loon Lake. I first started speed swimming when I was 8 years old with the Y Marlin-Dolphin Swim Club at the Port Arthur Y. I transferred to the Thunderbolt Swim Club not long after.  I swam with the Thunderbolts until part way through high school when I switched to competitive running.

I went back to the pool as a varsity swimmer when I was doing a post baccalaureate year at the University of North Dakota.  I continued to swim while pursuing my graduate degree at the University of Wisconsin. After graduating I swam with the Region of Waterloo masters and coached the age groupers.  When we moved back to Thunder Bay I swam with the Thunderbolt Masters in the mornings at the LU pool. Since then I have been swimming with friends at the complex a few mornings a week.  My favourite event is still the 200 fly! I enjoy many sports, and have found a new passion for stand-up paddle boarding when I am not relaxing at Loon LakE.

  COACHES' ADVICE

Workout Lanes

Thunder Rays members swim in 5 or 6 reserved lanes from 4:00pm to 6:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 8:30am to 11:00am on Saturdays. The workouts increase in intensity as you move across the pool lanes. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the most intense workout can be found in lane seven. We will help you find the lane that is appropriate to your skill level.

Equipment Sources

Given our equipment recommendations, we do have some suggestions as to where to find it. Fresh Air is a local sports store with a great selection of swim paraphernalia, and a reliable source of mesh bags and fins.  The staff have a list of club members so let them know your name for a discount.
