Other academic activities

In my work, I am interested not just in discovering and sharing mathematical truth, but also in how we can do so in better ways.

Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Wellbeing

I am a firm believer in the need to dismantle barriers to participation in Higher Education in general, and science subjects particularly, in order to enable everyone to reach their potential regardless of who they are. Since 2018, I have co-organised Warwick's annual Ada Lovelace Day with students from some of Warwick's subject societies. Ada Lovelace Day is an international event celebrating the achievements of women across the Sciences.

I am an active member of the departmental Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (ED&I) committee, and in 2020, I helped set up the Maths Institute's Early Career Committee. In 2022, I helped members of the Autism at Warwick exec organise and run a social for autistic Maths students.

I have a particular interest in mental health and our need to place it on a par with our physical health, and discuss it more openly. At Warwick, I have undertaken training in Mental Health First Aid, and I am a Social Inclusion Champion, seeking to help connect approaches to these topics across the University.

Engagement across disciplines and outside academia

I believe that combining different ways of thinking about the world enriches our understanding of it and its complexity. Throughout my career, I have always sought to facilitate and engage with researchers across disciplines. At Warwick, I have organised an interdisciplinary Solid Mechanics working group, the Applied Mathematics seminar, and am involved in the HetSys Doctoral Training Centre, which is focused on interdisciplinary collaboration and industrial engagement. I have been Warwick's departmental correspondent to the Newton Institute, and am on the Advisory Board to the nascent Academy for the Mathematical Sciences.
