The best way to clean cushions with removable covers or wash stained or smelly sofa cushions is to do a spot cleaning unless the care instructions say they can be machine washed. If pillows or covers cannot be machine washed, they can be cleaned with a sponge. Whether you choose to wash your pillows in the washing machine or by hand, they should be hung to dry in a place with adequate ventilation after washing. Your throw pillows may require dry cleaning, hand washing, or spot cleaning.
Throw pillows with covers made from delicate fabrics such as wool, silk or velvet are not washable as they only require dry cleaning. If you don't want to use the washing machine, try washing your sofa cushions by hand. Simply use a small amount of mild detergent and warm water to hand wash your pillows. If your pillows are very dirty at first, you can wash them one at a time.
If your pillow is very fragile or easily damaged, it is best to wash your hands. Before doing anything else, read the pillow care label for specific washing instructions. Unless otherwise stated on the care label and you are not concerned about damage to the pillow, use a mild detergent and wash the pillow gently in the washing machine. If the care label suggests wet cleaning, just separate the pillowcase from the pillowcase and toss it in the washing machine.
Before putting it in the washing machine, remove all pillowcases and read the labels on the pillows to make sure they are made from cotton, down, or synthetic material. To wash the pillow by hand, we recommend that you first test it on site using a white towel and a cleaning solution suitable for the fabric.
If the fabric is heavily soiled, it may be wiser to soak it in a mixture of water and detergent for an hour or two and then launder the pillow to remove any stains properly. The pillows can be washed, preferably in a front-loading washing machine, by hand or on a gentle cycle, and then dried thoroughly, first with a drip dryer and then in a fluff dryer / tumble dryer / no heat. If your pillows are machine washable, it's a good idea to put two pillows in the washer at the same time (especially if your washer is a top-loader with a center agitator) to keep them from spinning too aggressively.
If the pillows you're about to wash are on a thick sofa in the center of your living room or bedroom, you'll probably need to wash them at least once a month. It is always recommended to wash your pillows every six months and do a basic cleaning every two weeks. Memory foam pillows should be spot cleaned and, if necessary, hand washed in a bath, rinsed thoroughly and air dried.
