My great-grandmother lived in a small village called Hřivice in the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia during the Nazi occupation, where she lived in the same house for the entirety of her life until her passing two years ago. She would tell my mother that during the occupation, her family and others in the village would work together to hide Jews in their houses. When Nazi officials would visit the village, the Jews would be moved between houses by underground tunnels to prevent them from being found during inspections. Had anything awry been found, the Jews and any colluding families would most certainly have been sent to concentration camps. The families accepted this risk, and I like to think that my great-grandmother believed that she and her village made a real difference in the lives of those whom they hid.
