Every year, freshman college students will be told to join a few clubs, make some friends, and make college as enjoyable as possible. A study done by Chickering and Reisser’s vectors (1993) “studied the role of involvement in clubs and organizations in students’ psycho-social development after their first-year experience” (Foubert and Grainger,p.167). The study found that involvement in clubs and organizations is essential to the psychological development of students throughout their college careers (Foubert and Grainger,p.169). This is because college is an unfamiliar setting and experience for freshman. As a result, many freshmen take the advice to join numerous clubs/ school organizations. Students join clubs to establish a sense of meaning and purpose. Although joining clubs has its benefits, it also has its downsides.
Before you decide to join a few clubs, ask yourself these questions:
If you answered yes to all of these questions, chances are you are more than capable of joining a few clubs in your freshman year.
