In Chapter 7 of Things Fall Apart, Ikemefuna, who has become like a son to Okonkwo, is killed by him. Although Okonkwo has been ordered not to actually participate in the killing of Ikemefuna, he ends up striking him down with his machete after Ikemefuna runs toward him. The themes of masculinity and tradition are featured heavily in this chapter. Okonkwo is pleased that Nwoye, his son, has become more masculine because of Ikemefuna's influence. Nwoye has even begun to feign annoyance with things he once enjoyed, such as the origin stories his mother used to tell him. Okonkwo kills Ikemefuna because he does not want to be thought as weak by the other men who are with him. The theme of tradition can be seen in the ultimate reason for Ikemefuna's death. He is murdered because the oracle has decided he must be killed to atone for the killing of a young Umuofian woman. Also, a swarm of locusts come to Umuofia. Although this is a rare event, happening every seven years, all of the town participates in collecting the locusts and eating them. They are considered a delicacy to the Umuofians.

Achebe uses similes in this chapter. He does this to set the tone of the chapter, which is foreboding because of the darkness of the night and the unanswered questions about the journey. A simile is a comparison between two things using the words ''like'' or ''as.''
