It was 1967 and KVM won his first national award for Kandan Karunai. The movie had 15 songs. Songs like Manam Padaithen, Arumugamana Porul, Solla Solla, Thirupparankundrathil and Vellimalai Mannava are still popular. The year 1980 saw KVM winning his second national award. He was bestowed with the honour for his work in Telugu classic Sankarabharanam. Directed by K Vishwanath, the songs, including Dorakuna, Sankaraa Naadasareeraparaa and Omkaara Naadaanusandhanam are considered classics even today.

My father told me that they were Sethuraman and Ponnusamy, and later, upon reaching home, he played two vinyl records of the Madurai Brothers, as they were referred to. There were two songs that I still remember. One was a Lathangi raga song and the other was Thamathamen Swami in Thodi raga.

After the chamber concert, Sivaji gave his thumbs-up as he exited the place. One of the songs that the brothers played in their performance that day was included in the film too. It was Nagumomu in Abheri. But for the rest of the film, especially the now iconic Nalam thana song, the brothers stayed in Madras for nearly six months and practised with the music director K V Mahadevan's right-hand man Pugazhendi to get the nuances right.

Suja,

while browsing for Abheri i stumbled upon this post. When i was studying in college Isaw the movie. I was mesmerised by the songs, danse by Padmini and superlative performance by Sivaji. You know i read the novel week by week when it was published in kalki. What a great days! i miss those days. Even in strict environment I had a secret girlfriend in my native place. We planned it in such a way that we both saw the movie simultaneousely but in separate enclosures with our parents. This post brought me tears in my eyes but i loved it.

Her body language and dialogue delivery coupled with an affable nature secured her a permanent place in the Tamil film industry. Whether it was the corrupt Madras Tamil or dialects of Thanjavur or Madurai or the Kongu region, she rendered them all effortlessly. She acted in over 1,000 films and sang hundreds of songs.

The smart hand of the choreographer found the pulse of the songs with few variances. Represented quite differently from the screen version, the dance composition went hand in glove with the musicality and soothed the senses. But after a few songs, the feel good factor also led to a degree of sameness, which could have been easily alleviated by the composer.

The film was adapted from Kothamangalam Subbu's novel of the same name, which was serialised in the Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan in 1957-58. The film was mostly shot in Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Madurai. Its original soundtrack was composed by K. V. Mahadevan, and songs like "Nalandhana", "Maraindhirundhu" and "Pandian Naanirukka" became immensely popular among the Tamil diaspora.

The prints of the film in 16 mm format were acquired by the American Cultural Association for their archives to represent quintessential old-world Thanjavur culture, and by universities in the United States for the study of Bharatanatyam and Nadaswaram arts in particular. Thillana Mohanambal is included with other Sivaji Ganesan-starrers in 8th Ulaga Adhisayam Sivaji, a compilation DVD featuring Ganesan's "iconic performances in the form of scenes, songs and stunts" which was released in May 2012. Although film distributor Shanthi Chokkalingam stated in February 2012 that Thillana Mohanambal's remaining prints were "totally damaged", Pradeep Sebastian of Deccan Herald stated in April 2015 that he "recently" saw the film through a restored print. In its obituary for Manorama, The Hindu noted Jil Jil Ramamani "probably bore the closest resemblance to Manorama" in terms of being able to perform Karakattam and Poikkal Kuthirai.

Can we forget the artistry, talent, musical navigation and emotive expressions moulding the melody of the MPN brothers. Nalam Dhana? Marainthirunthu parkum marmam Enna? Aayiram Kan Pothadhu Vannakiliye? These songs captured the imagination of fans for decades and flowed effortlessly through the windy path of the nadaswaram. Nagu Momu, the popular composition of Sri Thyagaraja, also reached the ears of the common man.

ARR once remarked in an interview that Dama Dam Mast Kalandar is one of his most favorite Sufi songs. Based on Yaman, the song has a mystic charm. But for a composer to take a Punjabi Sufi tune, make it his own, infuse Tamil folk after removing traces of the original and present it as Varaha Nadhikkarai Oram requires the genius of ARR. Sufi, Carnatic, Western and Tamil folk styles meet at his studio to say howdy in this song which can only be described as a fascinating blend of class and class. No! No typos here. 006ab0faaa
