Overall series review, so far
2/14 Books read so far
I love Delicious in Dungeon, but so far, I feel like the manga has some really glaring flaws. The art is kind of just, fine. There aren't any interesting character designs or dynamic paneling. Visually, the manga is actually really boring and the anime clearly wins out in that department. If the anime wasn't so slow to release, I would honestly just watch it rather than read it.
the true star of the show is the vibrant and stunning world of Delicious in Dungeon. Its not just a copy and paste D&D fantasy setting, it is truly a universe all on its own. Its inspirations are clear to see, but its a love letter to those settings, not a direct copy. Usually, when the setting is the main character in a piece of fiction, the characters tend to be flat and boring. But Ryoko Kui is skilled enough in her world building and story-telling, that the setting doesn't totally out shine the actual characters.
Each member of the party is lovely crafted, with complex backgrounds, trauma, motivations, and personalities. These are not fantasy arch-type cardboard cutouts. Laios, Marcille, Chilchuck, Falin, and senshi are all so easy to love.
I am very excited to see where the story goes from here. 4/5 so far.
