Everything you need to know before joining The Wild Canvas Retreat.
We’ve answered some of the most common questions below to help you feel fully prepared and confident about your experience.
Eligibility & Skill Level Requirement:
This retreat is designed for intermediate to advanced artists. To ensure a rewarding experience for all participants and to match the pace of the instructor's curriculum, all entrants must possess a foundational, working knowledge of oil painting. By entering, you confirm that you can independently prepare a canvas, mix colors, use traditional mediums/solvents safely, and execute basic oil painting techniques without introductory instruction. The host reserves the right to request a brief portfolio or example of past work prior to finalizing your acceptance to ensure the workshop is a proper fit.
The focus of the retreat is plein air painting — working outdoors directly from life. You’ll explore light, atmosphere, color relationships, and composition within natural environments.
Once you are enrolled, you will receive a detailed materials list from the instructor, including recommended supplies, surfaces, and helpful preparation tips so you can arrive confidently and ready to paint.
No, flights to and from Puerto Rico are not included. Participants are responsible for arranging their own travel, and we are happy to provide guidance if helpful.
Yes. Airport pickup and drop-off are included, along with transportation to all painting locations throughout the retreat, so you can focus fully on your painting experience.
Daily breakfast, packed lunches during painting excursions, and evening dinners prepared by a private chef are included. The retreat also includes one special restaurant experience to enjoy local cuisine together.
Participants stay in private casitas with private bathrooms, along with access to shared spaces such as the pool and inviting communal areas designed for relaxation and connection. Although each casita has its own shower, they only provide room temperature water. All hot water showers are in the common area up at the pool house.
Puerto Rico offers warm daytime temperatures year-round. Evenings may feel cooler due to the elevation near the rainforest, so bringing a light layer is recommended. You may want to bring leggings/sweat pants and long sleeve shirts for the evening time.
