We rehearse every Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Spirit of Life Lutheran Church, located at 375 West 10th Avenue @ Yukon, Vancouver.
You don't have to do a 'full on, serious' audition but you will sing in front of our choral director and accompanist so we can get a sense of your range and style.
The short answer is no. Most choir members hold a black folder with their sheet music for concerts (the folders are provided by VCS). There may be a small handful of songs each term which are requested to be memorized, but it is never a condition.
It's definitely a bonus if you can read sheet music but VCS does not require that you do so. You can practice your parts and the songs regularly between rehearsals using vocal tracks VCS will provide, videos on YouTube (VCS will look for the best ones for this purpose and send to you links each term).
Yes. We have one retreat'day each term, usually a Saturday, often from 9:00am-3:00pm. At this retreat, we go through the entire concert to solidify our strong areas and work on those parts that need ... work :) And we also get the chance to lunch together and just hang a bit and socialize.
We also have a tech rehearsal the night before the concert where we go through the entire concert with the musicians and any guest singers we may have. Additionally, we have a run-through again the night of the concert before-hand, so it's usually a 5:30pm start time on the night of the concert.
