Let's break down these individual steps:
- A preliminary research exploration:
- Student will be required to identify their character's barrier to education and perform investigative research on that particular issue (i.e. slavery, natural disaster, child marriages, etc.).
- To contextualize their understanding of that barrier, student will conduct a brief overview of their character's country (please use the attached worksheet to guide this exploration).
- Students will also research social/political issues within their local community in order to clearly define barriers that obstruct their own learning process.
- A written essay:
- Students will write a 6-8 page compare and contrast essay (double spaced, MLA formatted) that explores the following questions:
- How do you and your character value education? How does it vary?
- What barriers block you and your character from accessing your education?
Throughout your analysis, be sure to incorporate and answer these guiding questions as well (responses to these questions would make great content for introductory or concluding paragraphs):
- What value does education add to an individual's quality of life?
- How can education impact/transform a community?
- How can education change the world?
- A three-minute video:
- In a three minute video, create a digital narrative that is similar those found in Girl Rising.
- Explore your own community and your experience, or history, with education.
- Take a risk and make the project personal by guiding us through your neighborhood and your reality.
- Production Steps:
- Use your cell phone, tablet, or laptop to shoot film of your community (your house, neighborhood, and school). Capture aspects of your daily life that impact your education. (Check out a tablet from Mr. Torres if you are having trouble accessing your own recording device.)
- Edit your video either through iMovie (if you are using an Apple device) or YouTube Editor.
- Add narration and background music when appropriate. (Earn three extra points to your total project score by submitting your video's narrative script!)
Lastly, don't forget to email your project to Mr. Torres!
