This project will require you to analyze the film Girl Rising, as a second source. Yup that's right, it's a secondary source because each short segment is written as a biography of an individual. Despite there being a mutual learning experience between a girl and a writer native to her respective country, the stories are ultimately written and narrated by people other than themselves.
Choose one of the vignettes from the movie and analyze the character's narrative. Be aware and critical of your own notions of education as you watch and analyze the character's scene. Using the guiding questions from the project's homepage and any emotions/feelings evoked by the film, throughly examine that character's environment and experience. Pay special attention to the barriers that inhibit the girls from accessing their education. Through an observation and analysis of another individual's educational experience, you will be formulating a lens from which to analyze your own reality.
The goal of this project is to use a compare and contrast analysis to learn about a new cultural environment while learning more about yourself and local community. In addition to the guiding questions, students will be asked to answer the following question: what barriers are working against my academic opportunities?
