From the creatively diverse city of Bristol in England, Jay Evans (they/them) is an exciting underdog in the local music scene. Since 2018 they have been building a strong portfolio of originals and remixes, gaining over 20 thousand streams across free online releases on Youtube & Soundcloud. Their style is a unique one, pulling influences from across countless styles, making them quite difficult to pin down to any one genre. It serves a reaction to what they consider a very saturated industry of faux-punk and generic dance beats, combining bizarre and experimental sound design with driving guitar chords and abstract & self referential lyricism. They have described some of their biggest inspirations as The 1975, Interpol, twenty one pilots, Moderat, Crywank, Radiohead and even Martin Garrix.
Jay's music is very DIY, using whatever equipment they can get their hands on to make sound (as well as being completely self-managed). The live sets follow this approach, using limited resources to have a wide variety of sounds and styles, and performing the metatextual lyrics. On stage, their energy is contagious, dancing with enthusiasm to every beat. Gigging around small venues without fancy lighting or customised visuals creates a focus on the music, which brings out the energy in their crowds.
Jay's first mixtape Reality, released for free in 2020, showcased their sound design and energy across a range of electronic styles. They followed that 2 years later with a soundtrack to a production of Blood Brothers, creating a mostly ambient score with sections of 80s inspired tracks. Their first studio album is called How Am I Doing? and tells a tale of impostor syndrome and self-acceptance in a scary modern world. It’s gained them nearly 1000 streams across major streaming platforms. Their next album is currently being written & recorded.
Jay is absolutely one to watch as they emerge from their namesake's underground.
