Kappa Alpha Theta's official philanthropy, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), works with children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. CASA has been Kappa Alpha Theta's national philanthropy since 1989.
CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to advocate for abused and neglected children to make sure they aren't lost in the overburdened legal and social service system or placed in inappropriate group or foster homes. A CASA volunteer stays on each case until the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. For many abused children, their CASA volunteer is the one constant adult presence in their lives.
Today, more than 75,000 CASA volunteers are serving 240,000 abused and neglected children around the country. However, 400,000 children are still waiting for a CASA because current funding levels can serve only 35% of the children in the foster care system. Learn more about CASA here.

Here at SLU, Theta's do a variety of things to raise money for CASA. Each semester, we have a philanthropy week that is dedicated solely to raising money for CASA. During these weeks we have an event each day. In the fall we have: profit shares with local restaurants, cookie deliveries on campus, and Bump Set Kite. Bump, Set, Kite is a volleyball tournament where other sororities and fraternities and anyone else on campus can form a team and compete! In the spring, we also have profit shares, cookie deliveries, and our biggest philanthropy event, Cakes for CASA. Cakes for CASA is an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast... the twist is you have to catch your pancakes! In addition to all of these events, we promote our philanthropy by tabling in our student center, wearing shirts that advertise Theta and CASA, and advertising on our social media.
