Chori cantores
The singers of the St. Ann Choir have always represented varied walks of life. Most have a connection to the Stanford community or reside in Palo Alto. Many come from further parts of the Bay Area. Some are trained musicians and others have gained much of their musical skill and knowledge through many years singing with the choir. While most members are Catholic, many of the choir's most devoted singers come from other faith traditions. All share a profound love of sacred music and history, and a joyful dedication to preserving Gregorian chant and the classic polyphonic choral repertoire within authentic liturgical contexts.
Magister cappellæ
Erick Arenas has sung with the St. Ann Choir since 2005 and became Music Director in 2025. A musicologist whose research focuses on liturgical music and orchestral music in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, he has been active as a church musician and scholar of Gregorian chant and Renaissance music throughout his academic career. In these areas his principal teachers have been William Mahrt (Stanford University), Lori Kruckenberg (University of Oregon), and George Nemeth (University of the Pacific). He earned his Ph.D. in Musicology at Stanford and is a professor of music history at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
