Language is the system we use to communicate with others. It includes both understanding what people say (receptive language) and expressing thoughts and ideas through words (expressive language). Language development is essential for reading, writing, and socializing, and it forms the foundation for academic success.
Types of Language
Receptive Language: This is how we understand language, like following directions, listening to stories, and understanding words or questions.
Expressive Language: This is how we express ourselves. It includes using words, phrases, and sentences to share ideas and tell stories.
Pragmatic Language: This involves using language in social situations, such as making eye contact, taking turns in conversation, and using polite words.
Read Together: Reading books and asking your child questions about the story helps develop both receptive and expressive language. Encourage your child to predict what happens next or share their thoughts about the characters.
Expand on Their Ideas: If your child says, "The dog is big," expand by saying, “Yes, the dog is big and brown, and it’s running fast.”
Use Visual Supports: Pictures, charts, or even simple written words can help your child understand instructions and concepts more clearly.
Encourage Storytelling: Have your child tell you a story about their day or use toys to act out a scene. This encourages creative thinking and strengthens language skills.
