When Zephyr was 10 years old, he met a young girl named Mirabelle. Despite Zephyr’s shyness, the two quickly became inseparable. Mirabelle taught him how to play the guitar, while Zephyr taught her to sing. They formed a remarkable duo, reveling in their musical collaboration. Mirabelle would often tell Zephyr, “My favorite thing about you is your yellow eyes.”
Mirabelle played a crucial role in helping Zephyr come to terms with his identity as a trans guy, offering support against his transphobic father. Despite her unwavering support, Mirabelle was battling a severe illness. Zephyr did everything he could to help her, but it wasn’t enough to save her.
On the day she died, three years after they first met, the doctor revealed that Mirabelle’s death was a suicide. Overwhelmed with grief, Zephyr vomited and withdrew into his room for several days, refusing to eat. His father, who harbored resentment toward Mirabelle, was indifferent to Zephyr’s suffering. In contrast, his mother tried to care for him, but her well-meaning attempts only deepened his despair by forcing him to eat and go outside.
One day, while Zephyr was in his room, he heard gunshots, screams, and the sound of people fleeing. Peering out, he saw the ground stained red with blood. Members of the Cross had attacked his village, which lay on the border between Coasta and Angfroest, displeasing Kimi. In a state of panic, Zephyr saw a young woman with curly hair and a cross mask standing calmly among the chaos. When he asked her about the situation, she contemptuously explained that the Cross would kill everyone, including him.
Driven by fear, Zephyr saw only one way to survive: he begged to join the Cross, feigning admiration for them and a desire to meet Kimi and Nao. The woman, intrigued but skeptical, demanded he prove his worth with a useful power. Zephyr revealed his abilities by manifesting wings, a pointed tail, and deer horns. Impressed, the woman simply said, “Interesting,” before knocking him out.
Zephyr woke up in a dark, oppressive room beside a boy and girl who were clearly close. The boy, Zetsu, was missing an arm, lost during an attack by the Cross on his village. The girl, Shoku, was Zetsu’s sister. They shared their stories, and Zetsu’s power—manipulating electricity—had spared them from execution. The siblings were from Syrena, and Shoku had lost her arm while protecting her brother. They talked for hours until a girl named KaeLa arrived. Despite her appearance of only 14, KaeLa was tasked with introducing them to the Cross base and its harsh rules.
Life at the Cross base was brutal, akin to a military regime, with severe punishments for rule violations. The inhabitants were sorted by class, height, age, or power. Zetsu and Zephyr were grouped together, while Shoku was placed elsewhere, causing Zetsu great concern. Over time, Zetsu and Zephyr became close friends.
In 528, after two years, they devised an escape plan. As they fled, they encountered KaeLa. Enraged, she removed her bandage, revealing a single eye, and used her power to blind Zephyr. Zetsu retaliated by using his electricity-based power to attack her, and they managed to escape to safety in Syrena.
