Different social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, are used to demonstrate that interpersonal relationships keep the audience involved in a story. The more well-known the celebrity is, the more impact their story will have on furthering the discussion of mental health. The media displays celebrities as superior, increasing the public’s desire to research the illness, as well as a desire to decrease the stigma. When celebrities disclose their mental illness in the public eye, they are more likely to impact those individuals who already have a personal connection with the celebrity. Celebrities who are positively framing their stories are helping educate the public by destigmatizing mental illness and bringing light to the prevalence of mental illness in today’s society.
