Kia ora, I’m Charlotte. I'm a music teacher, mum and firm believer in the power of singing to help us feel connected, uplifted and part of something. I have a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Anthropology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Classical Voice Performance, as well as a Teaching Diploma (secondary). I have been teaching in schools for 9 years now, having taught private singing lessons prior to this, and have experience with children from age 5 -18. I have become increasingly interested in looking at how music making, singing in particular, can increase wellbeing; especially for mums. I’m also drawn to singing as ritual: the idea that there is a song for every season, both in the natural world and in our lives.
The idea for The Singtuary grew from All Sing!, a relaxed singing group I began while on maternity leave. It offered parents and carers a welcoming place to sing together without needing to arrange childcare or worry about whether they were “good enough” to join in. I loved seeing how quickly singing helped people relax, connect and enjoy being part of a group.
Through my work as a music teacher, I have also seen how powerful it can be for young people to have a safe, encouraging space in which to explore their voices and grow in confidence.
The Singtuary brings these ideas together. My hope is to create warm, low-pressure singing experiences where every voice is welcome. You don’t need to read music or have any previous singing experience as songs are learned together in a relaxed and supportive environment.
