Design Proposition

Design Proposal- To create an augmented reality headset for emergency personal and soldiers that employs ISM band radio signals to locate people behind physical barriers.

• Objective: Hidden personnel constitute a pervasive threat for both military personnel and emergency responders. Whether it is people trapped in a fire or building collapse, or combatants hiding in a room, hidden figures still remain a prevalent issue. We aim to solve that.
• Background: Soldiers, SWAT members, etc. all put their lives at risk to keep us safe. Whether it's a missing person, an armed criminal hiding in a building, or soldiers clearing combatants out of a village, we should try our best to keep safe those who are keeping us safe.
• Methodology: The rough project outline follows as below (described more in detail below)
  • Employ the base transmitter and receiver to complete binary detection
  • Display full human figures superimposed on camera output
  • Size the technology such that it fits a standard tactical helmet
  • Final system design
• Expected results: We aim to provide a useful and cost effective device to government services by the end of our project. We will continue work after we have reached our first model to improve and strengthen our product.
• Cost: While the final cost is currently unknown, the final system will incorporate a custom printed circuit board, high grade directional antennas, a tactical helmet, and relatively powerful processing unit (capable of signal manipulation and real-time AR functionality). The initial design will most likely be in the range of $500-1000, making it relatively cost effective for government use, but prohibitive for the every day hobbyist.

The Search for A Solution

Many distinct techniques can be used to search for armed combatants within a room. Proposed techniques include:

• Capturing human movement with ISM-Band Doppler Radar - Supported by MIT Research
• Pinging the room with ultrasonic frequencies to look for resonances within the gun barrel - Novel technique
• Sweeping the room with RF energy to look for electrical resonance of weapons (gun barrels can act as antennas with a particular wavelength)
• Radio Imaging of Room with Phased Array Radar
