The Self Made Project is an idea meant to involve young people in the struggles faced by their fellow Australians.
The inspiration for this project’s name comes from a recognition of the opportunities we, as a group of young people, have been blessed with. We would each like to say that we have been ‘self-made’, that we have achieved those things we remember with pride by the merits of our own hard work and dedication.
However, we have undeniably been blessed with the opportunities presented to us, whether it be in the form of a good home and well founded education, or even in the sense of community and safety we have been given living in Australia. We have not earnt these parts of our lives; these are the things, given to us, that formed a solid base for us to grow from and that allowed us to work towards where we are now.
The Self Made Project seeks to facilitate others less advantaged with the same opportunities, so that they too have the chance to be ‘self-made’.
We mentioned helping our fellow Australians; more specifically by this we hope to offer our services for anyone who wants to call themselves ‘Australian’. We hope that in providing educational services for the disadvantaged people in our land, we can brighten not only the future of that individual, but also the future of Australian culture.
This is how we will approach facilitating opportunity; through education and community. Specifically, the Self Made Project aims to provide free and competitive tutoring for our community. We aim to accommodate for students of all educational backgrounds and ages, either personally assisting the student with material and exercises, or for students requiring services beyond the scope of what we can provide, we hope to provide contacts or pathways that can help the individual with the services they require.
We recognise that these educational services are complementary; they are not vital or maybe even a concern for those trapped by much larger problems. We hope however, that by making these services available we might help fulfill the potential of any person that might otherwise have felt held back by restricting circumstances.
By providing one-on-one or group tutoring for individuals, the Self Made Project mission is that we might not only assist in their education, but also inspire curiosity and help the student find passions they might not have had the chance to explore. Ultimately, our goal is to enable anyone with the same knowledge and curiosity we ourselves have been given, and which has fueled our desire to share.
