The project's objective is to demonstrate compassion to individuals who have incurred discrimination because of their inherent skin tones.
Battling against colorism is the primary mantra of this project and the organization through the empowerment of beautiful dark-skinned Filipinos with a unique approach to achieving and executing this goal – modeling. The modeling industry is considered to be the most influential platform to disseminate a message regarding a demographic’s beauty and worth. This is an open opportunity for the project to spread a message by scouting and hiring aspiring Filipino models who have been constantly dejected and rejected by companies solely because of their skin color.
Our organization also aims to expand this societal subject matter by promoting our stance to diverse and numerous social media platforms where a multitude of the globe’s population is interconnected to each other, and a wide reach of audiences is touched to the extent of their hearts. Let us unite and strive for a future where Morenas run the runway!
One of the fundamental sectors in spreading the word the project aims to target is the modeling industry – where individuals possessing darker skin complexions are underrepresented because of the industry-wide inclination to hire models who are conventionally viewed as attractive because of their light complexions. Although media enterprises are conscious of this dearth of representation as well as the latent coloristic bias in action, they continue to reinforce stereotypes in order to boost revenues and acceptability from the extensive audience that socially accepts these norms. The project circulates around the intention of starting an independent modeling agency where all models are judged and screened for their talent in modeling, and not because of their skin complexions.
What about the execution?
I. Modeling Agency
We intend to launch a modeling agency consisting of men and women who have been initially rejected by existing agencies primarily because of their darker-skinned complexion. Although it may appear that the organization is cherry-picking individuals within a specific set of standards, the modeling agency will function synonymous with how other firms work – it will represent a group of models hired, either by scouting or a direct application of the aspirant and will accept every person if they fit and ace the criteria of being a model. The only difference is that our modeling agency is not fueled by the societal colorist standards that have been implicated upon the industry and everyone will be given an equal shot at actualizing their passion without the fear of standing on an unequal platform.
II. Social Media Initiatives
Social media is a powerful tool. It provides a podium for sharing experiences, narratives, and visuals, as well as information and statistics in a digestible format, which engages a community by facilitating in understanding. Work to raise awareness contributes to the formation of a movement around an issue. One of the project’s initiatives is to help spread the message that we stand up for and one of the most effective ways in accomplishing this goal is to put out content to the biggest platform in the whole world – social media. Our modeling firm will be visible and released on multiple social media platforms, including a nonpartisan website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and many more.
Daily content about bringing awareness to colorism will also be posted on our dedicated page with the hopes of garnering up followers and starting a domino effect where everyone will be able to read, watch, comment, and interact with the details we strive to put out into the world.
