A PASSION | A PROJECT | A CHANGE
“The problem of the twenty-first century is still the problem of the color line." (Culbreth, 2006)
Colorism is a form of prejudice that develops from preconceptions about darker-skinned people and is institutionalized through racialized media portrayals. It is the notion that individuals of color with lighter complexion and Eurocentric characteristics have more privilege than those with darker skin and Afrocentric attributes.
CONTEXT OF COLORISM IN THE PHILIPPINES
Dark. The spectrum within the color wheel where the hues of blacks and browns reside have, and will always be, villainized by the culture of humans, be it the entertainment media, the cosmetic industry, everyday lifestyle, and this overarching issue that lies within contemporary Filipino customs.
This influx of Western outlook toward the lifestyle of people has slowly, but surely, seeped into the Filipino way-of-life and has progressed into the modern world in the form of skin-lightening products, stereotypes about the dark-skinned community in shows and movies, generational bigotry, and so forth. As a consequence of this habitual mentality that has evolved throughout the years and as a cause of the colonial effect of the Spaniards toward the glorification of lighter-toned people, the predicament of discriminating Filipinos with darker skin tones, globally known as colorism, was birthed.
We firmly believe that this project is an important one, especially for the Filipinos, owing to the reasoning that this matter has been obscured and off the beaten path for some time now and is lacking any initiative to be vocalized and heard by the Filipino people.
The individuals under this project are purposeful and are determined to help pass on awareness to everyone in the country and are willing to provide, take on constructive criticism, devote their time, and be one with the standpoint of “Morenas Run the Runway!” All of this is to evenly flatten the curve of colorism discrimination in the Philippines and to normalize a message that should have been normalized from the very beginning – despite having different tones of skin, we all bleed the same color.
A prospective team who calls themselves "Kollective Hustle" published a YouTube video on their channel on the 17th of September, 2019 which tackles COLORISM within the Filipino community as a part of their "Rice Bowl Conversation" series.
We highly suggest giving it a watch as it emancipates the hazy matter of complexion discrimination and gives those who cannot stand on their own a platform.
