Meredy Thompson has loved books for as long as she can remember—ever since a spark ignited in the 5th or 6th grade and slowly grew into a full-blown (and proudly admitted) obsession.
In 2025, Meredy began sharing her passion for reading on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, posting book reviews, recommendations, and plenty of bookish memes and videos. Along the way, she discovered the world of mobile bookstores—and that’s where the dream of The Readery was born.
Naming things is one of Meredy’s quirks, and she knew she wanted something that instantly reflected the heart of her mission. The Readery perfectly captured it: a space created “for the love of reading.”
The Readery began as a mobile bookstore in August 2025, traveling throughout Altus and surrounding communities and bringing affordable books directly to readers. For a year, the little bookstore on wheels became a place to discover new stories, meet fellow readers, and build the community that would eventually make a permanent bookstore possible.
In September 2026, that dream grew into The Readery’s first permanent home—a cozy 2,200-square-foot bookstore in Altus, Oklahoma. The new space gives Meredy room to expand the selection of previously owned and new books, offer bookish gifts and her signature dirty sodas, and—most importantly—create a place where readers can gather, connect, and stay awhile.
The new bookstore is truly a family project. Meredy’s husband, Michael, has been there through every step of the transformation, from demolition and construction to building the bookshelves and cabinets that fill the store. Their sons, Merrick and McCrae, pitch in too. Every bookshelf inside The Readery was handmade by Michael, making the space even more personal and meaningful to the family.
Today, you’ll find Meredy at The Readery, surrounded by books and readers, helping customers find their next favorite story, planning workshops and events, serving up dirty sodas, and continuing to build the welcoming reading community she dreamed about from the very beginning.
What started as a little bookstore on wheels has grown into a place to read, gather, celebrate, and feel at home.
And Meredy couldn't be more excited to welcome you into The Readery’s new chapter. 📚❤️
