Therapy (interchangeably used with 'counselling') is a goal-driven, research-backed, and a collaborative process that takes place between a wellness seeker (the client), and a qualified mental health professional (includes counselling psychologist, clinical psychologist or a psychiatrist). The goal here, is to address the client's concerns and help them navigate it in a healthy, and safe manner.
Because it is equally important to physical health. You can go to hospital when you have a fever, AND go to a therapist when you are stressed. In both cases, you are ensuring that you wake up the next day to be well enough and do things that you want to do. Our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors determine the quality of our day, doesn't it?
I offer a safe, supportive space for adults aged 18 and above through inclusive lenses and evidence-based therapeutic approaches. I provide therapy in two languages: English and Tamil. You can know more about my practice as you scroll down:
A therapeutic lens is the glass through which a therapist attempts to understand the client. Most often, these lenses align with the therapist's values and their own personal experiences. Adopting a particular lens involves intensive reading, training, personal reflection and applied experience with clients. Seeing a particular client through a particular lens is important for tailored interventions and helps improve therapist-client alliance. I use the following lens in my practice.
in the unconditional, empathetic space that I provide, the client is at the spotlight in therapy, while I act as a facilitator. the client will be in-charge of the direction we take in session.
due to the disruptive systems we live with as human beings, undergoing trauma is almost an inevitable result of life. The space I provide in therapy is safe, empathetic, and holds the client with utmost care and concern.
with a strong belief in the client as the expert of their life, I consider each client to be a collection of stories with intense characters and eventful lived experiences. how we narrate our life, is how we go through it.
we define ourselves based on our relationships with others. most often, our reasons for taking therapy is the impact we have on important people in our lives, and/or the impact they have on us.
Approaches are interventions or techniques that a psychologist uses in therapy with a client. These techniques or skills help the client navigate their issues and would help improve the client's emotional and mental well-being. I adopt the following approaches for individual (one-on-one) counselling:
learning skills to navigate life's struggles in a healthier manner, so that we can focus on living a meaningful, value-committed life.
understanding how our thoughts, emotions and behaviours are connected to each other, and learning to adopt new ways of thinking and feeling.
learning skills to help improve interpersonal relationships, cope with distress, regulate emotions, and enhance mindfulness.
Understanding partners' relationship through their interactional patterns, love maps, and interpersonal bond, helping them navigate issues in communication, misunderstandings and conflicts.
Involves helping partners recognise each others' attachment styles, communication patterns and emotional needs, helping them navigate interpersonal and marital issues.
Some of the most important details that all individuals needing therapy has to know includes the following:
Therapy is collaborative. It requires equal responsibility from both the client(s) and therapist. Therapy will not fix your issues, but working together with the therapist may help you navigate these issues in a healthier manner.
If theclient(s) is diagnosed with a particular psychiatric or psychological condition, it is important for the client(s) to collaborate with other mental health professionals including but not limited to, clinical psychologists (for assessments and diagnosis), psychiatrists (for prescriptions and medications), and psychiatric social workers (in case of emergencies, or immediate assistance).
The client(s) will be referred to another therapist or mental health professional if required, based on client's concerns and expectations for therapy, after discussion with the current therapist.
STEP 1: Before booking the first session, there will be a free, online discovery call for 20 to 25 minutes between the client(s) and the therapist. The client(s) can book the session using the following link, and select "Discovery Call" as the event type.
