BARRE, VERMONT-
Derryfield. Stratford. Thetford. Williamstown. Proctor. Blue Mountain.
The boys basketball teams from Orford have had a long history of falling short in the biggest moments.
And tonight, that history of blown leads, stunning misses, baffling calls and impossible free-throw luck finally ended.
The Rivendell Raptors overcame a slow start, then held on down the stretch with a brilliant defensive performance to defeat the Mid Vermont Christian Eagles to win the Vermont Division 4 state title.
The win marks the first ever basketball championship for Rivendell Academy. Their predecessor, Orford High School, had never won a state title either.
It was a worrying start for the Raptors, as after a quick opener from Harry Molesworth, the fourth-seeded Eagles hit a rhythm. Joel Roberts and Abel Goodwin continued their assault from the semifinals with a pair of quick-fire threes, while the Raptors struggled against the compact 2-3 defense of the Eagles. After Roberts’ second triple of the quarter put the Eagles up 13-6 Rivendell coach Andy Perkins used a timeout looking for answers.
The answer would come quickly enough for the Raptors. An 8-0 run spanning the final minute of the first quarter and the first two minutes of the second quarter, punctuated by a Derek Vogelien three-pointer to give the Raptors their first lead in nearly eight minutes of game time. After a back-and-forth middle section of the quarter featuring four lead changes, Rivendell began to make things click on both ends of the floor. Great defending from Josiah Welch and Jacoby Patterson would slow the Mid Vermont attack, while Molesworth led a strong offensive stretch, scoring two buckets of his own while setting up two more for teammates. A lone basket from Abel Goodwin would be the only break in what ended up a 10-2 run to close the first half that put the Raptors up 28-21.
Defense became the name of the game in the third quarter, as neither offense could find anything for long stretches. Despite having the better looks and creating more turnovers, the Raptors failed to capitalize, never stretching the lead past eleven points. A big and-1 layup from Roberts would drop the lead back down to single digits entering the final frame as nerves seemed to ratchet up for both teams.
But the nerves hadn’t seemed to quite affect the Raptors yet. The quickness of Derek Vogelien was on full display as the senior found Patterson for a layup before running coast-to-coast himself to draw a foul, forcing Mid Vermont to call a timeout as the lead increased to eleven points with six minutes remaining. A Molesworth putback on the next trip down would seem to be the deathblow, but like in their Monday matchup with Long Trail, the Eagles had some magic left.
Roberts shrank the lead down to 10 with a deep triple, and while Rivendell found a quick response with an Ashton Pierson leaner, the momentum had shifted. After foul shots from Goodwin and Roman Goeppner dropped the deficit to single digits, Roberts connected again from deep to make it a two-score game with 58 seconds to go. Pierson sank one of two tries from the line to break a miss streak from the charity stripe for the Raptors and put them up by seven with only 31 seconds on the clock. But even that wasn’t enough, as a mad scramble ended with the ball in the hands of the Eagles’ Roman Goeppner, who drained a rare three to push the game back to a four-point margin. After a timeout, Rivendell put the ball in the hands of Finn O’Donnell to be intentionally sent to the free-throw line.
O’Donnell canned both attempts with help from the rim, and the ensuing miss from Roberts ended in his hands, sending the junior back to the line for two final attempts. Two final makes on the two last tries sealed the game, and a desperation attempt from Roberts fell short as the Raptors stormed the court in elation as the final buzzer sounded.
“No lie, I was having flashbacks to the Long Trail game….they were hitting deep threes and we were missing shots from the line…. Glad we got the ball into Finn’s hands and he made the shots. That final two minutes took forever.” Rivendell coach Andy Perkins said post-game.
Harry Molesworth stuffed the stat sheet again with 15 points, 19 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. Ashton Pierson followed with 11 points and 6 rebounds, and Finn O’Donnell added 10 points, including a 6-of-7 performance from the line. Joel Roberts all scorers with 17 points.
“Honestly, it’s the least I can do for them,” said O’Donnell of his final makes in the clutch. “Those free-throws meant everything to me- emotion was pouring out of me at the end just thinking about the guys. This is just a great day, honestly.”
“That was cold,” Molesworth said of the final moments. “(Finn) hit a bunch in a row- super clutch.”
Rivendell finishes 20-4, having gone 17-1 since the return of Molesworth from injury on January 2nd. They graduate a senior class of Molesworth, Pierson, Welch, Vogelien and Josh Gould.
“Couldn’t be prouder of these boys,” said Perkins. “I’ve coached a bunch of them for a long time-since youth ball for some of them- and seeing them get here is amazing.”

BARRE-There may have been little joy from the last time the Rivendell Raptors played at the Barre Auditorium. But there were plenty of lessons to be learned from the defeat against Blue Mountain.
And if there was ever a night to prove the change, it was tonight. The Raptors ripped through the Danville defense with a lethal inside game and dominated all four quarters with a laser-focused effort to reach their first state final in eight years.
A furious first quarter of action laid clear the strategies of both teams. Despite Rivendell staying on the front foot thanks to interior buckets from Josiah Welch and Jacoby Patterson, Danville’s Christian Young was able to keep his Bears in the game thanks to a pair of triples, holding the lead at just four points entering the second quarter.
Rivendell’s glass-cleaning trio of Welch, Ashton Pierson and Harry Molesworth made their mark in the second frame, with each creating multiple possessions for the Raptors against an outmatched Danville frontcourt. Molesworth was especially successful, using his massive wingspan and vertical jumping ability to out rebound the entire Bears team himself in the half. Another sequence of offensive rebounding finished with a close-range Molesworth bucket ended the half with the Raptors leading 28-19.
After a first half owned by the largest Raptors on the floor, it would be the smallest Raptor’s turn to take over the game in the third quarter. Jacoby Patterson scored 11 points and added 2 assists in the quarter, using his quickness and body control to knife through the Bears defense and finish over larger players. But even with the Raptor assault, Danville stayed within single digits thanks to a trio of three-pointers and sliced a point off the deficit entering the final frame.
Like the 2022 semifinal, the Raptors quickly scored to open a double-digit advantage seconds into the fourth quarter. But the similarities would stop there. Instead, the Raptors pushed their advantage further with a 14-4 run in the first 4 minutes of the quarter as the outside shooting of Danville went ice-cold, effectively ending the game. Some final shots from the line would add a bit more distance as both sides removed their starters with a minute to go, allowing the players to get one final ovation.
Rivendell finished with a season-high 54 rebounds, led by Molesworth and Pierson with 21 and 14, respectively. Jacoby Patterson lead all scorers with 21 points. “Running the floor…hitting my teammates….it all just worked tonight.” Patterson said post-game.
The Danville duo of Joncas and Young scored 31 of their team’s 49 points, including 5 three-pointers. Patterson praised Joncas post-game, noting: “He’s a really good player….great shooter and tough to cover when he dribbles.”
Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins praised his team’s rebounding effort, pointing to the play of his trio of senior forwards as the key factor. “Harry, Ashton, Josiah….they really wanted this one tonight and they showed it on the glass.”
The Raptors face Mid Vermont Christian in the championship game on Saturday. The two teams met in a pre-season scrimmage that ended in a tie.
“They’re a very good team, very well coached, with a lot of good players,” said Perkins. “We have a lot of work to do.”

ORFORD- The Rivendell Raptors have often needed gritty, low scoring efforts to get them past their quarterfinal opponents. With the playoff intensity, it can only be expected that the offenses will slow and turnovers abound come postseason time.
Not tonight.
The Raptors increased their advantage for each of the first three quarters, running the Rebels out of the gym with a complete team effort to punch their ticket to the Barre Auditorium for the second straight year.
After a sloppy start featuring a succession of missed layups, the Raptors started to click offensively scoring eight straight points in the paint to force Leland and Gray coach Luis Vargas to call timeout. The lead stretched to as much as 11 points on a flying layup from Josiah Welch with just a minute to play, but a Trevor Stillwagon putback and-1 kept the deficit only in single digits entering the second quarter.
Any chance of a close game evaporated in the second quarter, however. After Alex Parker-Jennings opened the scoring with a slick reverse layup, the Raptors ran off a 13-2 burst highlighted by a pair of triples from Ashton Pierson to jump far ahead. Free throws from the Rebels would break the run slightly, but a big and-1 from Josh Gould and a free throw from Luke Avery stretched the lead past 20 entering the halftime break.
The third quarter would be dominated by Finn O’Donnell, as the bouncy junior poured in nine of his thirteen points as the Raptors extended their advantage despite a stronger quarter from the Rebels. “Pace is a big thing in this game….I tried to play with pace tonight and it really helped me.” said O’Donnell of his scoring performance. A final bucket from Ashton Pierson stretched the lead to 27 entering the final frame.
The final quarter turned out to be the best of the night for the Rebels, who nearly matched their three-quarter total with a 22-point outburst. But the Raptors responded with solid shooting from the line and a few interior buckets to ultimately seal a misleading 20-point victory.
Four Raptors reached double figures, with O’Donnell leading the pack with 13 points followed by Ashton Pierson and Harry Molesworth with 12 each. Pierson added 11 boards in a
double-double performance.
With the win, the Raptors move on to the state semifinals at the Barre Auditorium for a second straight year and third time in four years. “It’s amazing,” said Ashton Pierson. “...three out of four years is awesome. Ended up in the right place.”
Rivendell coach Andy Perkins’ message after reaching the Barre Auditorium in his first year coaching at the varsity level was one of gratitude. “Athletic director Jamie Bourn….head coach Ross Convertino….and especially my wife. Basketball spouses are the real MVP- a lot of late nights.”
The Raptors advance to face Danville on Wednesday night. “A lot of film to watch on that one,” said O’Donnell. “They’re a very good team but we’ll be ready .”

ORFORD- The key to any underdog getting a win is to strike first. And on Wednesday night, the 15th-seeded Craftsbury Chargers did exactly that, scoring on the game’s first possession.
Unfortunately, they couldn’t do much from there. The second-seeded Rivendell Raptors would respond with 19 unanswered points, quickly squashing any upset bid. The margin would only increase as after a run-breaking three from the Chargers, the Raptors would score 47 more unanswered points over three quarters in a dominant showing. While there would finally be some points on the board for the Chargers in the final period, Rivendell were well ahead and closed out the win with their bench lineup to reach the final score.
It was an egalitarian effort for the Raptors, as all 11 dressed players scored, with 3 players reaching double figures. The team’s 18 assists were a season high.
“We haven’t made starting games hot a priority this year,” said Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins of his team’s quick start. “So it was good to do that tonight.”
“It’s a good win.” said forward Josh Gould after the game. “Obviously some stuff to improve….but we got it done and everyone had a smile on their face.”
Rivendell will face Leland and Gray in the Quarterfinals on Saturday. The Raptors have defeated the Rebels twice already this season, but Perkins expects this one to be much tougher.
“They’re a really good team who’re playing really good basketball right now,” he said. “It’s a tough matchup but we have to be ready.”
Tip-Ins: Junior Liam Welch recorded his first ever varsity points….Parker Piper sank the first three-pointer of his varsity career….Rivendell finished with a team-wide effective field goal percentage of 61%....Leland and Gray defeated Poultney 62-49 to advance to the quarterfinals.
WESTMINSTER- With the score tied entering the 4th quarter of Rivendell’s matchup with Bellows Falls, Bellows Falls coach Evan Chadwick could be overheard telling his team in the huddle: “It doesn’t get much better than this. This is what you dream about.”. And in many ways, it was. A tied game in front of a raucous home crowd with massive playoff implications and revenge on the Raptors at hand? What better.
It was until the quarter started. Rivendell turned the dream night to a nightmare, blowing the game open with a 12-2 run and pulling away with repeated two-way brilliance for a double-digit win.
After a back-and-forth first half closed by a buzzer-beating triple from Bellows Falls guard Jamison Nystrom, the Terriers took a three point lead into the break. Another three-pointer from Cole Moore to open the third quarter would stretch the lead to six and seemingly put the Raptors on the ropes. But as they’ve done before, the Raptors found an answer, running off seven straight points to take the lead before an unlucky bounce in the dying seconds of the quarter gave the Terriers the tying bucket entering the fourth quarter.
But in this fourth quarter, the script would quickly flip. Jacoby Patterson spun free of his defender and laid the ball in to break the tie before Ashton Pierson took over the game. The senior forward was all over the glass to score a tough putback before stepping outside and nailing a rare three-pointer to stretch the Raptor lead to seven. After a Colby Dearborn layup broke the run, Harry Molesworth would take his opportunity in the clutch well, sprinting the floor to find Patterson for an and-1 bucket before swooping by two Bellows Falls defenders with a beautiful reverse layup. With his team suddenly on the back foot, coach Chadwick would call a timeout to look for answers, but none such could be found. Despite the Terriers best efforts, they found themselves flummoxed by an energized Raptor defense and could not pull anywhere closer than six points. Two final buckets from Patterson and Finn O’Donnell would put the game out of reach as the Raptors closed out the win and their regular season with it.
Patterson scored 18 points to lead the Raptors. O’Donnell followed with 12 points, while Harry Molesworth posted 9 points, 19 rebounds and 5 blocks.
“Hard-nosed defense has been the key to it all.” said Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins post-game. “The offense takes care of itself, but if the defense works then we can be a real good team.”
“My teammates really kept my head in that one.” said O’Donnell of his late-game heroics. “I was not having the best game but they kept me in it. I love my teammates, man.”
Rivendell had already secured the #2 seed in the playoffs prior to the matchup. They will find their opponent when the playoff bracket is announced on Sunday.
“We have four practices,” said Perkins. “We have to work hard and keep this going.”

ORFORD- After Rivendell defeated Leland & Gray on February 7, Rivendell coach Andy Perkins noted “At this point of the season, they don’t give out style points.”
And against White River Valley, there were few to be won on either side. Nevertheless, the Raptors made just enough plays on the defensive end and in transition to secure a massive win in the playoff race in front of a large crowd.
After trading free-throws to start the night leading 3-1, the Raptors ran off 8 straight points to crack open a double-digit lead with over half the quarter to go. But from there, the first of many mistakes reared their head as the Raptor offense went silent for the rest of the period, failing to capitalize against a shell-shocked opponent. Instead, more free-throws from the Wildcats would cut the lead to 7 entering the second quarter.
Neither offense could do much against a tough opposing defense for the entire period, as Rivendell could only produce 6 points despite a series of marathon possessions compared to White River Valley’s 7 points. As such, the Raptors led just 17-11 at halftime.
The Rivendell offense finally showed signs of life in the 3rd quarter, as after a solo 5-0 run from Harry Molesworth stretched the lead back up to double digits the game seemed to be turning. A Jacoby Patterson layup would push the lead to 13 points as the elated crowd readied for the finishing blow, but the Wildcats had another answer. A three-pointer from Tattin Griffin combined with two tough runners from Zander Clark would return the Raptors to just where they started the quarter- leading by 6 with a surging opponent behind them.
The final quarter would become a physical battle of fouls and stamina as both offenses finally showed life. While the Wildcat offense frequently cut the deficit to just 6 or 7, Rivendell always seemed to find an answer of their own despite surprisingly poor shooting from the line. One final make at the line from Jacoby Patterson would close a satisfying, if aesthetically unpleasing win for the Raptors.
Harry Molesworth led the Raptors with 18 points and a career-high 20 rebounds. Jacoby Patterson followed with 10. “Harry is a rebounding monster,” Rivendell AD Jamie Bourn said post-game. “Hasn’t been a team we’ve seen this year that can keep him off the glass.”
“Really pleased with the defensive effort tonight.” said Rivendell Coach Andy Perkins. “We knew from the last time we played them that we needed to fix that….and we did tonight.”
“We saw a weakness in the middle of their zone….used that in the second half” said Molesworth of the team’s offensive performance.

SPRINGFIELD- The Springfield Cosmos have been one of Vermont’s most volatile teams this season. Mixing thrilling wins and close losses with uncompetitive blowouts, one never really seems to know what you’ll get when you go down to Dressel Gym to face them.
But on this afternoon, the Rivendell Raptors didn’t seem to care what version would be put in front of them. The Raptors smothered the Cosmos on the defensive end and outmuscled them in all levels of the game to cruise to a blowout win.
The first quarter would turn out to be the most exciting of the night. After Ashton Pierson and Brody Perham traded buckets on the opening possessions, Carson Clark gave the Cosmos their only lead of the night with a neat midrange jumper. Things really seemed to be going the Cosmos way when Rivendell star Jacoby Patterson missed an open look from deep on the next possession, but a traveling violation on Clark would hand the ball right back to the Raptors. Derek Vogelien would nail back-to-back threes on the ensuing two possessions to put the Raptors up 4, but his team couldn’t pull away either as more patient offense from the Cosmos would tie the game right back up with a minute left in the quarter.
That final minute would feature one of the best sequences of the day. After a Josiah Welch putback gave the Raptors the lead, Tanner Gintof shook his man and swished a smooth pull-up to equalize. But Welch, undeterred, would back Gintof down in the post and rattle in a beautiful fadeaway jumper to give the Raptors the lead to end the quarter.
Welch’s heroics seemed to lift the Raptors entering the second period, as a 6-0 surge would open up a larger lead before a single freethrow from Luke Stocker briefly halted the streak. But Stocker’s free throw would be the only score of the quarter for the Cosmos as a combination of fantastic defense from the Raptors and ill-timed turnovers kept them off the board. Meanwhile, Rivendell would continue their scoring at an albeit slower pace, taking a 24-11 lead into the half after two Vogelien free throws with no time on the clock.
A pair of three-pointers from Derek Vogelien and Jacoby Patterson to open the third quarter killed off nearly any shot the Cosmos could have at a comeback as the Raptor defense remained excellent. With two minutes left in the quarter, Welch capped the Raptor run with another off-balance jumper to push the lead to 21 and effectively end the night for the Cosmos.
While the Springfield offense would finally show some life in the final quarter, Rivendell’s offense was right there to meet it as the Raptors kept their advantage up to play out the stretch. With two minutes remaining, Springfield would remove their starters to signify the end of the night for both sides.
Derek Vogelien led the Raptors with 13 points, followed by Jacoby Patterson and Josiah Welch with 11 points each.
Rivendell held the Cosmos to just 5 points total in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. “Defensively, we played really well.” said Vogelien post-game “Calling screens, closing out, rebounding- it all worked for us today. Josiah Welch especially- he had a really good game.”
Rivendell host White River Valley on Tuesday. The Wildcats were the last team to beat the Raptors, defeating them 67-60 in Royalton on February 2nd. “We’ll be ready this time,” said Welch. “We know what we did wrong and we can fix that and beat them.”
Tip-Ins: The Author apologizes for not publishing a report on the Raptors win over Mill River on the 16th. The Raptors won 65-36 behind 12 points from Harry Molesworth….Rivendell secured a minimum 3rd-place finish in Division 4 with the win….Patterson’s streak of games with a made 3-pointer extends to 17….Springfield shot 3 of 12 at the line….17 points from Robert McNelly led the JV to a 51-38 win.
ORFORD- Preparing for his team’s matchup with Green Mountain just 5 days after the first meeting between the teams, Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins was worried. “They’ll be a different team.” he said. The Chiefs were indeed a different team. Buoyed by the return of star forward Eben Mosher, they denied many interior opportunities and battled the Raptors for rebounds all night in stark contrast to the matchup in Chester on the 9th.
But just like that game in Chester, Rivendell’s defense would quiet all other worries. The Raptors jumped out to an early lead and withstood every comeback attempt down the stretch to win comfortably in front of a large crowd.
A deep triple from Harry Molesworth opened the scoring for the Raptors, and while a quick jumper from Tanner Swisher would put GM on the board, a flurry from Rivendell forced the Chieftains to use a timeout just 4 minutes into the game already trailing by double digits. Although a three-pointer from Derek Vogelien would push the Raptor lead to 13, the Chieftains began to chip into the lead thanks to some solid interior buckets from Eben Mosher. Jacoby Patterson had a chance to extend the lead to 15 at the buzzer, but the attempt missed and the Raptors left the quarter leading 18-6.
The Chiefs would show their best stretch of the night to open the period, as after an early Raptor bucket they ran off a 13-4 surge to drop the lead to just 5. But just as momentum seemed to be turning, Jacoby Patterson was there to answer. The junior scored a three over the top of a much larger defender before getting to the rim for a pair of impressive finishes in a solo 7-0 run. The second, a twisting flip that he released while not facing the basket with 13 seconds remaining in the quarter, would give the Raptors a 10-point halftime lead.
The teams mostly traded points for the third quarter, as despite a few defensive highlight plays by the Raptors the offense could not string together any big run to put the game out of reach. Key buckets from Josh Gould and a big and-1 from Molesworth to close the quarter upped the lead to 11 entering the final frame, with the Chiefs not quite out of striking distance.
And sure enough, the Chiefs would immediately put the Rivendell lead in peril as a floater from Swisher and a corner three from Caleb Merrow cut the lead to just 6 with plenty of time left. But a key jumper from Josh Gould pushed the lead back to eight before a rare three-pointer from Ashton Pierson would restore the Raptors original margin and put the game to bed. Leading by 14, the Raptors removed their starters with a minute left to allow a large ovation from the season-high crowd. A late triple from Evan Kirdzik pulled Green Mountain to within 11 but no further as the teams ran out the clock.
Jacoby Patterson led the Raptors with 13 points, all coming in the first half. Harry Molesworth recorded 9 points, 7 rebounds, 6 blocks and 4 assists. Eben Mosher led Green Mountain with 10 points.
“Time to put this one away.” said Gould of his clutch jumper. He remarked on the teamwork, defense and adaptability of the team given the strange lineup for the Senior Night game. “We played really well,” he said. “Glad we could win this one.”
“Senior nights are very different,” said Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins. “We had lineups we’d never played with before….but the defense was really good.”
Rivendell return to action on Thursday night at Mill River. The Raptors defeated the Minutemen 54-28 in their season opener. “Less turnovers, make more shots.” said Harry Molesworth on what the team needed to improve looking forward.

ORFORD- In the Rivendell Raptors previous meeting with the Twin Valley Wildcats, a long bus ride on the coldest day of the year seemed to be the reason for a sluggish offensive performance in an eventual 20-point win.
And the reverse matchup seemed to prove this exactly. Defending home court, the Raptors jumped to a large lead and never looked back, riding hot starts to each half to grab a blowout win.
The first quarter belonged to Harry Molesworth, as the senior got to the bucket for two quick scores plus a made foul shot within the opening two minutes as the Wildcats struggled to respond. A tip-in by Jacoby Patterson would force Twin Valley coach Chris Brown to call his first timeout, and the initial results were a success as Noah Dornburgh nailed a three pointer on the ensuing possession to put the Wildcats on the board. But from there, it would be all Rivendell. Back to back threes from Patterson and Molesworth stretched the lead even further, although a pair of free throws from Dornburgh would keep the lead at just 12 entering the second quarter.
The start of the second quarter would be the most positive stretch for the Wildcats, as a neat runner from Cody Mangant plus a deep three from Liam Wendel cut the lead to single digits and seemed to have the Raptors reeling. Things would change after the reintroduction of Harry Molesworth midway through the quarter, however. The offensive spark provided by the Raptors star spearheaded a 7-0 run entering the break as Twin Valley’s upset hopes seemed to be fading fast.
If the hopes seemed to be flickering out, the third quarter would extinguish them entirely. A Carson McHale triple 40 seconds into the quarter would be the entirety of the Wildcats scoring output as Rivendell hit a new gear on the defensive end. “Josiah, Ashton, Derek….all fantastic all night but especially in the quarter.” said Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins of the key players to the performance. On the offensive end, smart ball movement and hard-nosed rebounding would extend the advantage against a demoralized opponent, closing the quarter with the Raptors leading 48-15.
The defensive performance could not quite hold up in the fourth quarter, as free throws from the Wildcat reserves and a less focused offensive effort from the Raptors kept the margin identical at 33 points to reach the final score.
Harry Molesworth led the Raptors with 17 points, 13 of which came in the first half. “They wanted to talk from the bench while I was taking free throws- so I had to show them they couldn’t stop me.” said Molesworth of his performance. 3 other Raptors joined him in double figures in a balanced scoring night.
“We had a lot of good practices going into this one,” said Perkins. “It’s a busy week and we know we have to start it well.” Perkins is correct in that. The Raptors host Green Mountain on Tuesday, followed by trips to Mill River and Springfield on Thursday and Saturday before a massive rematch with White River Valley on the 20th.
“They’ll be a different team than the first time we faced them.” Perkins said of the matchup with the Chieftains. “But we’ll be ready.”

CHESTER- When asked what needed to improve after Rivendell’s win over Leland & Gray on Tuesday, Carter Bacon had just one thing to say. “We need to finish games, put away teams that we have a lead on them.” the junior guard said.
And tonight, the Raptors met that goal. After allowing an early lead to dwindle to a worryingly close margin, the team responded with a crushing defensive performance to cruise to a blowout win on the road.
After building a quick 9-2 lead on the back of baskets from Harry Molesworth, Finn O’Donnell and Ashton Pierson, the Raptors seemed to have full control as Green Mountain called their first timeout of the night. But coming out of the timeout, the Chiefs swung the momentum their way. A pair of threes from Caleb Merrow would cut the lead in half as the Rivendell offense slowed, making just one more bucket in the quarter and only leading 17-9 despite seeming the stronger team.
The second quarter would continue the upward trend for Green Mountain as despite Rivendell’s offense performing better, the young Chiefs could keep pace and even cut further into the lead. With just over 4 minutes left in the quarter, Merrow’s third triple of the half sliced the lead to just 6 and sent Rivendell to a timeout searching for answers.
The answer would once again be Carter Bacon. The junior knocked down a three from the wing to restore the nine-point cushion before another triple from Patterson pushed the lead to double digits. The Rivendell defense would also aid in the run, forcing tough shots and turnovers as the Chieftains struggled to get much of anything going in what would turn out to be a 9-0 run entering the half.
If the third quarter was supposed to provide an answer for the Chiefs offensive woes, it never arrived. A dominant Rivendell performance held them to just 4 points in the frame while the Raptor offense found open shot after open shot against a tired defense. While the quarter could have been worse on account of a series of missed shots, the 14-4 margin opened a near-insurmountable lead for the Raptors entering the final frame.
Despite removing their starting lineup, the Raptors would continue to dominate the final frame, holding their opponents to just 6 points to close out an impressive win.
“It’s a good win for us, especially on the road….removing turnovers and upping the intensity really helped.” said Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins after the game.
Finn O’Donnell lead all scorers with 15 points. Harry Molesworth finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high 7 assists in just 18 minutes of action. “Teammates helped out,” Molesworth said of his night. “Just all-around good play.” Caleb Merrow lead Green Mountain with 9 points.
The Raptors return to action on Monday night when they host Twin Valley. “I’d like to see us play a little more up-tempo,” said Perkins. “I think that’d help us a lot.”
Tip-Ins: Green Mountain were without preseason all-league selection Eben Mosher due to a knee injury….17 assists marks a new season high for the Raptors….20 points from Gabe Wright-Swaine led the JV team to a thrilling, come-from-behind win….Molesworth recorded his first dunk of the season in the third quarter….Rivendell moves to first in the SVL-C with the win.
ORFORD- No scorers in double figures. A team shooting percentage just above 30. A relentless, win-starved opponent.
Every factor seemed to point to the Rivendell Raptors losing to the Leland and Gray Rebels, but the Raptors built a lead and held on despite a dramatic comeback attempt from the Rebels to notch a key win.
The Rebels started the game with a far more focused defensive strategy, employing a 2-3 zone while paying special attention to Rivendell’s Jacoby Patterson. The strategy saw success early, as after a pair of quick buckets from Harry Molesworth the Raptors found themselves stifled. On the other end, patient possessions from the Rebels wore down the Rivendell man-to-man defense. A late layup from Leland and Gray’s Cody Hescock would close the quarter with the Rebels leading by 4 and the Raptors floundering.
It would take an unlikely source to kick-start Rivendell’s rally: Carter Bacon. The junior guard nailed back-to-back threes to regain the lead as the Raptors started the quarter on an 8-0 surge, finally finding holes in the Rebel defense. Despite great effort from the Rebels, Rivendell kept their lead around 4 points until Bacon’s third triple of the quarter pushed the lead to 7 points, where it would stay entering the half.
The momentum would continue to swing towards Rivendell in the third quarter as after a back-and-forth start, the Raptors would have their best sequence of the night midway through the quarter. After Jacoby Patterson sunk a 3 a Rebel miss would end in the hands of Harry Molesworth, who delivered a bullet pass through 2 defenders downcourt to Derek Vogelien, who made the extra pass to a streaking Patterson for the and-1 layup. Patterson would sink the freethrow to push the lead to 13, where it would stay at the end of the quarter thanks to a buzzer-beating layup from Luke Avery.
Leland and Gray would finally switch out of their zone defense to a more aggressive man-to-man look to start the fourth quarter, but Rivendell seemed unfazed and ready to cruise to a comfortable win. A 13-point lead with about 4 minutes left seemed to be the end of any real threat.
Something strange would happen with about 3 minutes remaining, however. A miscommunication on defense plus a press turnover would give the Rebels a 5 point swing, while Rivendell would go ice-cold from the free throw line. A layup would cut the Rivendell lead to just 6 with 90 seconds remaining before Alex Parker-Jennings would nail a deep three-pointer while being fouled and sink the ensuing free-throw to cut the lead to just 2 with 55 seconds to go. A quick foul would send Finn O’Donnell to the line with little time left, and after making his first attempt, a miss on the second would end in the hands of Josh Gould, who would put the ball in Jacoby Patterson’s hands. Patterson would sink one of two free throws to put the contest out of reach, despite one final possession for the Rebels.
“They don’t hand out style points at this point of the season,” Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins said post-game. “We got the win, and that’s what matters.” Perkins credited the play of Josiah Welch, noting his excellent defensive play and energy. “It might not show up in the scorebook….but Josiah was huge for us tonight.”
Derek Vogelien and Carter Bacon would lead the Raptors with 9 points each. Alex Parker-Jennings led all scorers with 16 points.
“(assistant coach) Cole said we needed a spark, and I was feeling confident.” Bacon said of his career-high performance.
Rivendell travel to Green Mountain on Thursday. “We need to improve closing out games.” said Perkins of the upcoming matchup. “Do that, and we’ll win.”
Tip-Ins: 12 points each from Robert McNelly and Liam Welch led the JV team to a blowout win….Barring a playoff matchup, Rivendell’s seniors complete a career sweep of the Rebels….4 separate players made 3-pointers for the Raptors….7 Raptors recorded 4 or more rebounds.
WILMINGTON- Saturday was one of Vermont’s coldest days in recent memory.
And for much of their game against the Twin Valley, it seemed that the Rivendell Raptors were frozen. Turnovers, missed shots and miscommunications left the Raptors unable to pull away from the underdog Wildcats, leaving them far from the standard of play fans had grown accustomed to. But in the end, Rivendell were able to string together enough shots and stops to notch a solid, if disappointing victory.
Rivendell started well, scoring on each of their first two possessions and forcing turnovers from the young Twin Valley squad. But after a Wildcat timeout, Rivendell would find their attempts to extend the lead fall short as Twin Valley eliminated mistakes on offense and forced five first-quarter turnovers to stay within just 3 points at the end of the frame.
Rivendell would wake a bit in the second quarter as Twin Valley’s offense ground to a halt in the face of an energized defense led by Ashton Pierson. “Ashton was really good for us today,” Rivendell assistant Cole Stever said post-game. “(He) played great defense, rebounded well and took smart shots.” But despite the defensive effort, the offense remained in a rut, hampered by seven more turnovers including three offensive fouls that kept Twin Valley firmly in the rear-view mirror. Finally, a rainbowing three-pointer from Derek Vogelien and a close jumper from Finn O’Donnell would extend the lead to eight for the Raptors, where it would stay entering the half after a missed layup at the buzzer.
Jacoby Patterson would finally heat up in the second half nailing a pair of three-pointers as part of a 13-3 run to open the third quarter that would finally put the game out of reach. A one-man run from Josh Gould at the start of the fourth quarter would push the lead to 20 points, where it would stay as both teams played out the stretch with their reserves to reach the final score.
Finn O’Donnell would lead the Raptors with 11 points alongside 8 rebounds. Cody Mangnant would lead all scorers with 12 points. Rivendell recorded a season-high 13 assists.
“The long bus ride contributed to a slow start but we stuck through it and worked as a team to get over it.” said Luke Avery post-game.
Rivendell will host Leland & Gray on Tuesday.
Tip-Ins: The 2-hour, 10-minute bus ride is the longest Rivendell face all season….20-point games from Gabe Wright-Swaine and Liam Welch led the JV team to a blowout win….Rivendell’s 77% mark from the freethrow line was the highest of the season….After back-to-back games with over 15 rebounds, Harry Molesworth only recorded 3 rebounds in 18 minutes of action….all 11 rostered Rivendell players saw floor time in the win.
SOUTH ROYALTON- Rivendell coaches and players alike knew their matchup with White River Valley would be a tough one. A young, constantly improving team coming off a great performance and backed by a fantastic crowd? It'd be a tough ride.
It’s hard to think they imagined it going like this, though. The Wildcats controlled the game from wire-to-wire and matched every Rivendell swing with a swing of their own, holding on for a fantastic win.
The opening minutes featured both teams matching surge to surge, with Rivendell answering back-to-back buckets from the Wildcats with a 4-point surge of their own before the teams traded baskets to reach a 8-8 score at the midway mark of the quarter. But from there, it would be all White River. Brayden Russ would score 6 straight points with only a Harry Molesworth putback to interrupt him before Wyatt Cadwell would sink two consecutive threes including one from well behind the arc as the Wildcat lead would balloon to double figures. Some late buckets from Rivendell would slow the bleeding and end the quarter with the shell-shocked Raptors trailing 21-14.
Rivendell would start the quarter on a hopeful note with back-to-back transition layups, but White River would quickly settle into a defensive rhythm as their aggressive 2-3 zone quieted the dangerous shooters of Rivendell. Neither team seemed to gain much ground until a brutal miscommunication gifted White River’s Zander Clark a wide-open look from deep, and the sophomore made no mistake. The triple coupled with another more contested look from Cadwell would seem to mark the point where the Wildcats pulled away, but more interior work from Molesworth and slick transition play from Derek Vogelien kept the Raptors in the game, leaving just three points between the teams at the half.
The third quarter would see White River Valley extend their advantage through more great defense and well-timed three-pointers as Rivendell looked flummoxed. Still, Rivendell’s own defensive stops would keep them within striking distance, only trailing by eleven points entering the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter would provide more excitement than any other quarter, largely owed to the shooting of Jacoby Patterson. After a quiet start, the Raptors top scorer finally found his touch, scoring 8 straight points of his own to open the frame. But Cadwell and the WIldcats had an answer, matching every bucket with one of their own to keep the lead intact. Shook to life, Rivendell’s offense began scoring at a great pace, moving to within four points after a Molesworth layup halfway through the quarter, but found their efforts matched by flawless shooting from the line from the Wildcats. A massive and-1 from Clark with two minutes remaining would put the game away despite late three-pointers from Patterson and Vogelien. A final miss from Vogelien would close the game at the final score of 67-60.
Harry Molesworth led all scorers with 24 points and added 15 rebounds. Brayden Russ scored 21 points to lead White River.
“The loss is on me.” Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins said post-game. “I failed to prepare the team for this game….didn’t adjust.” He also credited the shooting of White River Valley, noting the multiple contested shots they made in the second half. “Great shooting performance….hard to beat.”
“Mental mistakes….missed too many easy shots” said Molesworth.

ORFORD- The Rivendell Raptors entered the Saturday matchup with Bellows Falls having not played a game in 18 days, and for the first six minutes of the game, it certainly seemed that way.
It’s a good thing high school games are 32 minutes, then. Rivendell found their way back into the match and held on from the second quarter onward in a gutsy, convincing win.
From the opening tip, it was clear that the Terriers wanted to impose their physicality on the game and in the opening minutes, they did so successfully. After a back-and-forth start with buckets from both teams' stars, it was Bellows Falls who got into a rhythm, suffocating the Raptors on defense and getting big points from Jamison Nystrom. The senior guard nailed a pair of tough midrange jumpers as a 10-0 run pushed Rivendell to use their first timeout, searching for answers.
Rivendell would indeed find two answers out of the timeout. The first was obvious: Jacoby Patterson started to heat up. A three-pointer and an underhand flip for a layup would take a chunk out of the Terrier lead, but at this point the second answer kicked in- free throws. A succession of fouls from Bellows Falls would send multiple Raptors to the line as the Terrier offense sputtered, leaving the teams just three points apart after a quarter of action.
A dead-ball technical foul and two subsequent made free throws would cut the Bellows Falls lead to just three before a slick layup by Patterson gave the Raptors their first lead of the night. The two guards would trade buckets from there as the lead would swing from team to team for the opening minutes of the quarter. A brilliant sequence from Patterson would finally break the deadlock, as a stolen inbounds pass and layup would open the floodgates for a big Rivendell run that pushed the lead to double figures. Patterson would close the half with a layup through three defenders as the lead stretched to 12 points at intermission.
The third quarter would feature more magic from Nystrom, but Rivendell always seemed to have an answer. Despite several tough buckets from the guard and perfect shooting from the line, key buckets from Ashton Pierson and accurate free throw shooting from Patterson would render a two-point change in the deficit for all of Bellows Falls’s efforts.
The fourth quarter would see the game’s physical nature fully transform to a war of attrition, with the teams combining for 27 free throw attempts in the period. A pair of free throws from Nystrom to cut the lead to six with 4:30 remaining would bring the Terriers the closest they’d come all night, but several neat end-to-end sequences and great free throw shooting from Rivendell would close out a somewhat misleading 14 point win.
Jacoby Patterson led all scorers with a career-high 29 points. Harry Molesworth followed him with 11 points, 18 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Jamison Nystrom led Bellows Falls with 27 points. “He’s really tough to match up with…can shoot, handle the ball.” said Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins of the guard’s performance.
On his career night, Patterson credited hustle and outside shooting as the reasons behind his point total. “Got to the basket a lot…my teammates really helped” he said post game.
Players and coach alike agreed that free throw shooting was the major area for improvement. “Maybe we should take 60 each!” joked Finn O’Donnell post game.
Rivendell return to action on February 2nd against White River Valley.
Tip-Ins: Rivendell went 27 of 46 at the line compared to Bellows Falls going 21 of 26….Inappropriate fan behavior led several fans on the Bellows Falls side to be ejected….Robert McNelly led the JV team to a thrilling victory with 22 points….Molesworth has recorded 15 or more rebounds in 3 of his last 4 games….Rivendell moves to the top of the SVL-C with the win.
TOWNSHEND- After two straight blowout wins, it could be assumed the Rivendell Raptors would cruise past a weaker Leland and Gray squad. From just the surface score, it would seem that way. But it was a less smooth affair as the final score showed, as the Raptors had to pull away from an excellent Rebel offensive performance to reach the convincing final score.
It was an uncharacteristic stumble out of the gate for Rivendell, as smooth midrange shooting from Leland and Gray and a disorganized 2-3 zone defense put the Raptors in a 6-2 hole just 90 seconds into the game. Even as Rivendell’s offense began to kick into gear, consistent great possessions had the Rebels leading 12-9 after an Alex Parker-Jennings floater through the quarter. “We came out very flat,” Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins said. “We tried a (2-3) zone and it obviously didn’t work.”
But things would start to swing on the defensive end as Rivendell switched to their traditional Man-to-Man look, while Harry Molesworth would change the game almost on his own on the offensive end. The senior forward took full advantage of his matchup to dominate the paint, scoring back-to-back buckets to give Rivendell their first lead of the night. Josiah Welch would quickly follow with an interior bucket of his own as a 6-0 surge pushed the Raptors well ahead. A late bucket from the Rebels would cut the lead to just 3 ending the quarter, but with all the advantage going to Rivendell.
The second quarter would start with more interior buckets for the Raptors, as their dribble motion offense created lanes to the hoop for Molesworth and Finn O’Donnell to take full advantage of. A high-flying Derek Vogelien layup would push the lead to double digits, as the Raptors matched every Leland and Gray bucket with two or three of their own. Another burst would force a switch to a zone defense for the Rebels, which Jacoby Patterson would take full advantage of to nail an easy corner three on the first possession after the switch. A late Molesworth shot to push the Raptor advantage to 15 would be blocked, and the first half closed with Rivendell up 38-25.
The third quarter would find a fervent Leland and Gray fightback attempt dismantled by a clicking Raptor offense, as despite the Rebels scoring their highest total of the night, they left the quarter trailing by even more. A trio of Rivendell threes, including a rare distance shot from Josiah Welch, would prove to be the difference as the quarter ended 58-40.
An early O’Donnell layup would stretch the lead to 20 just seconds into the period as an exhausted Rebel squad finally ran out of gas. After such a hectic pace, both offenses would finally slow as the teams coasted to a 69-48 final score.
Jacoby Patterson continued his 6-game run as the team’s highest scorer with an 18 point outing. Harry Molesworth would follow with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks in just 3 quarters of action. Alex Parker-Jennings would lead the Rebels with 18 points.
Patterson was pleased with the team’s ball movement post-game, noting the team’s unselfishness with the ball throughout their performance. Coach Perkins agreed, crediting “a few great live practices” as the reason behind the team’s performance.
Rivendell returns to action against Springfield on Friday. “Defensively, we have to improve,” said Perkins on changes the teams had to make ahead of the matchup. “It’ll be a tough test.”
Tip-Ins: Rivendell finished with a season-low 6 turnovers….The senior class moves a win in Orford away from completing a 8-0 run over the Rebels for their high school careers….Gabe Wright-Swaine scored 16 points to lead the Junior Varsity to a blowout win….he declined to comment on his career-high performance….Rivendell finished with four players in double figures.

BRADFORD- There was a festive atmosphere in the Garone Gymnasium as the Oxbow Olympians warmed up against the Rivendell Raptors. Sure, the team may have been 1-6, but rival Rivendell were in town and looking weaker than they had in many a year. The energy in the building was palpable as the tipoff approached.
Then the game happened. Rivendell turned the festive atmosphere into a funeral, smothering the O’s on defense and lacerating the team in transition for a blowout win.
From the opening tip-off, it was clear that Rivendell had a definitive advantage in speed, as Derek Vogelien took the tip straight to the basket to give the Raptors the lead just seconds in. Jacoby Patterson would nail a three and Finn O’Donnell would knife through the defense for a layup on Rivendell’s next two possessions to put the Raptors up 7 just two minutes in and silence the large crowd. The Olympian offense was lifeless, struggling to solve the aggressive man-to-man defense and unable to get anything on the offensive glass against Harry Molesworth. A Molesworth layup in transition would push the Raptor advantage to 9, forcing Oxbow to call timeout to stop the bleeding. But like the Raptors last game against Blue Mountain, no remedy could be found. A wide-open Patterson three would stretch the lead to double digits before Reece Isley scored Oxbow’s first points of the night from the freethrow line. Another Oxbow bucket would seem to trim the lead to just 10 at the end of the first, but Derek Vogelien flew up the floor in response and found Harry Molesworth for a lay-in to end the first quarter with a score of 16-4.
A Vogelien steal and score would stretch the lead to 15 as the period opened, but Oxbow would finally find a bit of a groove after that. A Zavian Walton three-pointer followed by a Chase Lund pull-up would cut into the Raptor lead, and lead to some nerves creeping in for Rivendell. But just as the game seemed to be turning, a bone-headed mistake by Walton gifted Josiah Welch a layup, and from there Rivendell would dominate. Unselfish ball movement in transition would create easy buckets for Ashton Pierson and Carter Bacon, all the while Oxbow continued to struggle from the floor. The defining sequence of the game would come just before halftime when after hitting his third three-pointer of the night, Patterson would steal the inbounding pass and convert the layup to push Rivendell’s lead to 20.
Unlike the meeting with Blue Mountain, there would be no rally found in the second half for Oxbow. Instead, it would be more brilliant Rivendell passing spearheaded by Derek Vogelien that compounded the deficit. The third frame also featured a notable uptick in chippy play, as the frustrated Oxbow players and fans began to get upset at the team’s poor performance and targeted Rivendell players with their anger. Derek Vogelien would receive a technical foul for responding to the Oxbow crowd in what would be the most notable point of contention. Rivendell would end the period on a 12-0 surge, highlighted by back-to-back threes from Ashton Pierson and Finn O’Donnell, to enter the 4th quarter up 60-24.
No mercy would be shown in the final frame, either, as Rivendell pushed the lead to 50 points and held Oxbow scoreless for nearly 6 minutes before letting off the gas to reach the final score.
Jacoby Patterson led all scorers with a career-high 20 points on 77% shooting. Derek Vogelien followed with 13 points in a balanced scoring night that saw four Raptors reach double figures. Harry Molesworth hauled in 18 rebounds in a career high performance.
“They left me open again,” Patterson said after his career night. “They never learned and neither did BMU.”
“Our ball movement was a focus in practice, and we showed that tonight.” added Vogelien, name-dropping several famous passing teams the Raptors emulated. He was surprised by his technical foul, stating he’d never seen anyone receive one for an offense like that before.
Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins was also elated, praising the “complete team game” from his squad. “Practices have been really good and really high-focus”, he noted post-game, also crediting the strong play of Harry Molesworth and Jacoby Patterson. “Jacoby had the biggest play of the night,” he said, referring to the guard’s one-man run at the end of the first half.
Rivendell are next in action on the 10th at Leland and Gray. Oxbow, losers of seven straight, host Stowe on Saturday.
Tip-Ins: No Raptor player played more than 22 minutes….The team had their best shooting performance of the season, posting a 60% EFG percentage….Liam Welch led the JV squad to a 40-23 win….Molesworth and his fellow seniors are now 7-0 against Oxbow in their careers….Oxbow opened the night by running through a banner that said “Rip the Raptors”....Rivendell recorded a season-high 14 assists.

ORFORD- Every fan, coach and neutral who knew Rivendell and Blue Mountain had a prediction for what would happen when the teams finally met: a tight, defensive battle in which one team would notch a statement win.
There would be a statement. But it came in anything but a close game. Rivendell scorched Blue Mountain from wire-to-wire, dominating the Bucks in front of a raucous home crowd in a blowout win.
The opening pair of possessions seemed to prove the predictions right, as both teams' attempts to feed their star forwards ended in turnovers. Ricky Fennimore would put the Bucks on the board first with a nice interior move, but Ashton Pierson quickly equalized. Good ball movement found Jacoby Patterson for a three-pointer, but Evan Dennis answered with a three-point play of his own to knot the game up at 5 apiece just 2 minutes in. But from there, it was all Rivendell. Harry Molesworth announced his return from injury with a high-flying putback before running coast-to-coast for an and-1, prompting a timeout as Blue Mountain struggled to answer.
No answer for Jacoby Patterson could be found in that timeout, however, as the junior guard nailed two threes in quick succession to balloon the Raptor lead to thirteen points. The Bucks could not answer as their offensive game stalled in the face of relentless defense by a Rivendell defense led by Josiah Welch, and left the quarter trailing 20-7.
The second quarter may have been the best of Rivendell’s season. They once again started the quarter hot, with a Patterson 3 and an acrobatic Finnegan O’Donnell putback putting any idea of a Blue Mountain comeback to sleep within the first minute. The lead would stretch to 20 as Molesworth would find a streaking Derek Vogelien with a great outlet pass that brought thunderous applause from the large home crowd. Even as foul trouble threatened to derail the Raptor offense, unselfish ball movement and great offensive rebounding would fuel a long run highlighted by several intricate passing sequences for open 3-pointers. Another skyscraping Molesworth putback would push the lead to 30 entering the break, and push the crowd to near delirium.
Blue Mountain entered the third quarter freshly energized, and brought a creeping feeling of deja vu as they started the frame on a 9-0 run that energized the bench and visiting supporters. But Rivendell would find an answer to even that as they regained their defensive composure and kept the advantage up. A brilliant passing sequence that involved the ball touching the hands of all five Raptors would end in another Patterson trey to push the lead back to 28, leaving the Bucks with just a two-point change in the margin for their fervent efforts.
The fourth quarter featured the least action of any quarter as Blue Mountain accepted their fate and removed their starters two minutes into the period, leaving both teams to play out the remainder of the game with their bench lineups.
Jacoby Patterson led the Raptors with 19 points, including a career high 5 triples. Harry Molesworth followed with 13 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks in a great return from injury. Evan Dennis and Ricky Fennimore scored nine apiece to lead Blue Mountain.
Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins was pleased with his team’s performance, crediting the “couple of really good practices” in the lead-in to the game. “Everyone was just clicking tonight,” he said post-game. “If we play like that, we’ll be a tough team to beat.”
The game had special meaning for Harry Molesworth as it marked both his return from injury and a chance to recover some pride from the team’s loss to the Bucks in the state semi final last year. “We had to avenge the loss last year….we’re clearly the better team” he said post-game.
On his career night, Patterson joked about “having a special feeling” as he warmed up. “I just took the shots available to me,” he said. “They gave me a bunch of wide open looks.”
Rivendell are next in action against Oxbow on Thursday. “We have to keep momentum up,” said Perkins, joking that the team’s winning streak sits at one game. “Just keep playing the way we’re playing….and we’ll win.” added Patterson.
Tip-Ins: The large Rivendell crowd included many alums, including all-time leading JV scorer Sam Drummond….Despite vast crowd encouragement, reserve forward Luke Avery was unable to score in his limited minutes….Blue Mountain have lost back-to-back games after a pair of blowouts to open the season….Robert McNelly lead the JV team to a win….Tonight marked the first game Rivendell played with a full-strength roster.

WINDSOR- The scouting report for the Windsor Yellowjackets was simple. Led by sharpshooter Maison Fortin, they would attempt to push the pace and outgun opponents with a barrage of three point attempts, while creating easy points with a full-court press.Unfortunately, knowing and stopping something are two very different actions. Rivendell found this out the hard way as the Yellowjackets blew the game open with a second quarter surge, then kept the lead out of reach in a comfortable win.
Rivendell started the game well, with Jacoby Patterson slicing through the Yellowjacket defense to find Josh Gould for an easy layup. On the very next possession down, Josiah Welch missed his first attempt but followed it in with a flying finish to give the Raptors a 4-0 advantage within 2 minutes. Windsor nailed their first three of the night on the next possession but Rivendell answered with a layup to hold their advantage. But from there, it was all Windsor. Maison Fortin scored his first points of the night on a driving layup, then followed with a three-pointer to give the Yellowjackets their first lead of the night. Windsor would continue to push their advantage as despite Rivendell holding the ball for long stretches, the end product never materialized. A Rodger Petermann three would cap the quarter with Windsor leading 14-6.
The second quarter opened with real hope for Rivendell, as triples from Carter Bacon and Jacoby Patterson sliced the lead down to just two in quick fashion. But from there, Fortin would begin to dominate as the Raptor offense stalled. The senior guard dropped in bucket after bucket, nailing three pointers and slashing through the defense for 11 consecutive points as the team built a 36-15 lead going into the break.
In the second half, Windsor’s offensive onslaught never slowed. Despite Rivendell finally putting some points on the board, the Yellowjackets seemed to have an answer for everything thrown at them. Jacoby Patterson would spearhead the best stretch for the Raptor offense, scoring 10 consecutive points with a succession of dazzling moves, but his one-man onslaught barely moved the needle as Windsor simply pushed the ball up the floor faster than the Raptors could ever respond. Windsor reserve Lee Bevis nailing a three-pointer in immediate response to Patterson’s final triple of the quarter felt emblematic of the struggles the Raptors faced all night. With just seconds left in the quarter, Patterson would get one shot at repeating the long-range bomb he scored in the matchup with Stevens, but the shot fell short and Rivendell trailed 57-35.
The fourth quarter passed rather quietly as the breakneck pace of the game finally caught up to both teams. After the scoring barrage of the third quarter, the two teams only combined for ten points in what would be a meager end to a fast-moving affair. After a real lack of success before, Rivendell made a few more free-throws to reach the final score of 61-41.
Maison Fortin led all scorers with 31 points. “Man, he’s fast….he can hit it from outside and drive. He’s a really good high school player.” said Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins after the game. Jacoby Patterson led the Raptors with 16 points.
“It’s the best defense we’ve faced all year,” said Patterson post-game.
“Hats off to them. They’re a really good team and they play at a great pace.” Perkins added.
Rivendell is next in action on January 3rd when they host Blue Mountain. The game marks the first matchup between the teams since the 2022 state semifinal, where Blue Mountain ended Rivendell’s bid at a perfect season in dramatic fashion.
Tip-Ins: Rivendell’s 20 points in the third quarter marked the highest score in a lost quarter since the 2021 playoffs….Welch and Patterson were named to the all-tournament team….Fortin won the inaugural tournament MVP award….Rivendell were missing forward Parker Piper due to illness….Pierson and Welch accounted for 72% of Rivendell’s total rebounds….Rivendell finishes the 2022 calendar year with a 17-4 record.
WINDSOR- As the Rivendell Raptors warmed up for their first game of the Connecticut River Classic tournament, a grim reality made itself clear. Despite valiant efforts, star forward Harry Molesworth’s expected debut would be pushed back at least another game. To some teams, the surprise absence of a star player might be the demoralizing force behind a slow start.
Not so for Rivendell. The Raptors jumped out to a large lead thanks to a relentless defensive performance and fended off every comeback attempt from Stevens with big shot after big shot in a statement win.
A Jacoby Patterson three-pointer on the first possession opened the scoring for Rivendell, while on the other end, Stevens could not keep pace. Josiah Welch continued the opening salvo on the next possessions with a pair of athletic finishes, before a twirling move from Finnegan O’Donnell and a smooth Josh Gould jumper opened an 11-0 Raptor lead. Defensively, the 2-3 zone of Rivendell flustered the Cardinals, who resorted to shooting threes against the traditional gaps of the coverage as their attempts at dribble penetration failed. It would take nearly half the period before a Lucas Belisle free-throw would finally put Stevens on the scoreboard, and even that was quickly answered by another Raptor basket. Despite the defensive performance, the Raptors offense faded and a Belisle layup with just seconds remaining would give the Cardinals and opportunity to escape the quarter only trailing by 10 points. But even this would be answered by a brilliantly improvised inbounds play gave Rivendell’s Carter Bacon an open look from distance, which the Junior nailed to put the Raptors up 16-3 at the end of the period.
Welch would continue to make plays in the second period, as he added another great finish in a 6-0 surge to start the frame for Rivendell. Stevens would connect on their first three-pointer after many attempts for their only points of the quarter, but O’Donnell would score right back, grabbing his own miss twice before finally finishing. Shortly after, Patterson would weave through three defenders to find Josh Gould, who would finish with the foul to push the Rivendell lead to 20. From there on in the quarter, Rivendell’s defense would dominate, highlighted by a ferocious block by Welch that would keep the Cardinals at just 6 points entering the break.
A strange scoring error was discovered at the break, and despite all sources stating otherwise, two Rivendell points were given to Stevens, making the score 28-8 at the half rather than 30-6.
Stevens would finally show life in the third quarter, as the switch to an alternating 2-3 and 1-3-1 zone defense gummed up the Raptors dribble penetration and produced turnovers from slowed decision making. Guard Jai Ribiero would make his stamp on the quarter early, forcing turnovers and flying in transition to lead a 6-0 opening run for the Cardinals. Stevens would continue to chip into the deficit as their many three-point attempts finally began to fall and Rivendell’s offense sputtered, only briefly sparked by Bacon’s second three of the night.
The most pivotal sequence of the game occurred with 15 seconds remaining in the quarter. After a Ty Theriault three sank, Stevens had closed the deficit to just 13 points with possession going their way for the 4th quarter. Jacoby Patterson had other plans, though. With the clock ticking down, he evaded two Cardinal defenders to release a shot from well past the three point line that splashed through the net as time expired, returning the lead to 16 going into the final frame.
If the shot hadn’t killed all hope for a close game, a quick Rivendell surge to open the quarter would. A rare triple from backup forward Luke Avery would prove the deathblow as the Raptors would play out the stretch, holding off all attempts at even lowering the deficit thanks to an excellent performance from the line.
Jacoby Patterson led the Raptors with 14 points, including a perfect performance from the line. Josiah Welch followed with 12 points on 66% shooting, and was 1 rebound from a double-double. “Harry being out injured was disconcerting….but we knew we could win.”said Welch post-game. Asked about his night from the line, Patterson credited the extra shooting time the team was given pre game. “Form Shooting really helped,” he added.
Devin Genes scored 7 points to lead the Cardinals.
“Really big win for us,” Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins noted post-game. He named the team’s defensive communication and the recently returned Welch and O’Donnell as the big factors in the victory. Ball security remained the common space for improvement. “We were careless for a stretch today with a big lead….tomorrow we won’t have that advantage.”
Rivendell will face tournament host Windsor in the championship game tomorrow at 7.
“I gotta call off work tomorrow.” Welch said of the matchup. “But I’m excited.”
Tip-Ins: Rivendell are 3-0 when winning the turnover battle….Windsor defeated Fall Mountain 73-39 behind Maison Fortin’s 38 points….The JV Raptors fell 43-23 to Woodstock despite 12 points from Liam Welch….Patterson’s 3-pointer had the longest distance of any recorded make for Rivendell in 5 seasons….The editor would like to apologize to anyone mislead by claims that the game would be played in Claremont.
ORFORD- With two tough losses under their belt already and injuries piling up, it seemed that the Rivendell Raptors just couldn’t catch a break. But with the return of Josiah Welch and Finnegan O’Donnell from injury, there seemed to be a promise of better days ahead. At least for one game, that promise was paid off. The Raptors dominated the game from wire to wire, jumping out to a big lead and accelerating away thanks to a total team effort.
The Raptors scored their first two baskets of the night in quick succession, with Jacoby Patterson getting dribble penetration and finding an open Josh Gould for easy layups to build a quick advantage. From there, the Rivendell shot-making shone, as multiple players scored tough baskets over the top of Sharon’s man-to-man defense. Sharon would switch to a 2-3 zone defense midway through the quarter and began chipping into the lead, with both Parker Bogardus and Caleb Benjamin finding success in the two-man game against the Rivendell defense. Even still, a Finnegan O’Donnell floater at the buzzer gave the Raptors a 10 point advantage going into the second period.
The start of the second quarter was dominated by the Raptors and more specifically Josiah Welch. The senior forward, making his season debut after a thumb injury sidelined him for the first three games, wasted no time making his presence known on both ends of the floor. Following a steal, he first found O’Donnell with a defense-splitting bounce pass for the easy layup, then followed it up the next possession with a neat jumper over the top of two defenders. Welch’s effort and leadership on the defensive end also spearheaded a dominant performance in the quarter, as the Phoenix were held to a single point that came with only 43 seconds remaining in the quarter. Combined with a strong offensive performance from O’Donnell, the Raptors led 32-9 at the half.
The third quarter was dominated by Josh Gould, as the Raptor center added 8 of his 16 points in the period, hitting elbow jumpers over defenders and bulldozing his way to the rim while also looking impressive on the defensive end. The lead stretched to 30 points after a Jacoby Patterson triple just three minutes into the quarter, and stayed there thanks to some small signs of life from a Sharon offense and heavy minutes from the Rivendell bench. With a minute left, Gould thundered down the lane for a strong finish to bring the loudest cheer of the night from the small crowd in attendance and increase the Raptor lead to 33.
Sharon’s offense finally woke up a bit in the final period, with point guard Jack Lloyd scoring seven consecutive points to open the quarter as the Raptors went fully to a bench lineup. Sharon would add eight more points for their highest scoring quarter of the night, although good ball movement for Rivendell would keep the game well out of reach. Some late free throws for the Raptors would push the lead back up to 30, where it stayed for the 61-31 final score.
9 of the 10 Rivendell players who played scored, with Gould and O’Donnell leading the pack with 16 points each. O’Donnell would also add 14 rebounds in a career night for the junior guard. Jacoby Patterson led the team in assists with 5. Caleb Benjamin and Parker Bogardus would each score 12 to lead the Phoenix, who fell to 1-2 on the year.
Coach Andrew Perkins was pleased with the performance of his team tonight. “It was good to see us run our plays tonight,” he said post-game. He also credited the help of several players from the Junior Varsity squad who helped the team in a crucial practice on the 20th. “Gabe, Liam, Nolan….were a big help so we could run our plays” he added. On the return of O’Donnell and Welch, Perkins said: “It was just what the team needed…. It definitely lifted spirits.”
When asked about his performance on offense, Gould credited his own movement and great passing from his teammates. “Cutting, Passing, hustling best I can….me and my teammates setting up plays.” O’Donnell was pleased to make a good return as well, saying “It felt good….it was my first full game back and I felt I had something to prove tonight.”
The Raptors are next in action in a holiday tournament at Stevens High School on the 27th. “It’s good competition,” Perkins said of the double-header. “We have a lot to work on.”
Tip-Ins: Robert McNelly and Gabe Wright-Swaine scored their first varsity points….Rivendell has had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio in both wins and a negative one in both losses….Rivendell enters the christmas break with two losses for the first time since 2018….Garrett Stever and Jameson Gilbert, members of the record-setting 2021-22 team, were in attendance….Despite rumors, Rivendell coaches did not wear Santa hats.
THETFORD- After Rivendell’s close loss to Woodstock on December 14, fans and players alike could take several positives away from the game, even with the sting of defeat present. Not so much after Monday night’s game. The Raptors were outplayed in all stages of the game and trailed from the first possession of the game onwards in a brutal loss.
A strong interior move by Boone Fahey gave the Panthers the lead on their first possession, a lead quickly added to by a Jacob Gilman three-pointer as the shell-shocked Raptors struggled mightily on offense. Thetford’s aggressive man-to-man defense and switching system overwhelmed Rivendell, causing several turnovers in just the first quarter and harrying Rivendell’s guards into poor shooting performances. After a second Gilman three, Derek Vogelien nailed a triple of his own to finally put the Raptors on the board with 90 seconds remaining in the quarter. A Jacoby Patterson triple from the quarter quickly followed, but more buckets from Fahey closed the quarter with the Panthers ahead 14-6.
The second quarter featured more of the same, as although Thetford’s offensive execution tailed off, a dominant performance on the glass gave them the advantage they needed to extend their lead. The lead may have gotten even bigger if not for a few stellar plays from Patterson, who drew the largest cheer of the night from the visiting fans with a slithering layup through multiple defenders. Nevertheless, the lead extended to 12 at the break as the Panthers took advantage of seven second-quarter turnovers for Rivendell to score in transition.
Those hoping for a second-half recovery would be quickly let down, as Thetford opened the quarter on a 10-3 run, sealing Rivendell’s fate. The teams would mostly trade baskets from there on, playing out what would be a very uneventful fourth frame that saw both sides play many of their reserves.
Jacoby Patterson led Rivendell with 11 points on an efficient shooting night. Boone Fahey led Thetford with 16 points.
“Their movement off the ball….they did that way better than we did” said Raptors coach Andrew Perkins post-game. Perkins also credited how the Panthers controlled the ball and eliminated turnovers in the victory.
“It’s a good defense,” added Patterson. “We had trouble scoring.”
Both player and coach agreed that ball security would be important entering the game against Sharon on Wednesday. “We only have one practice,” said Perkins, “We’ll do what we can.”.
Tip-ins: The loss was the largest for Rivendell since a 64-40 loss to Green Mountain on February 15, 2021….Thetford recorded their first win against Rivendell since 2018….Thetford did not shoot a free throw until 3 minutes into the fourth quarter….Robert McNelly led the Junior Varsity team with 10 points in a 4 point loss….Several former Raptors, including 2019-20 all-state selection Zach Gould, were in attendance.
ORFORD, NH- The Rivendell Raptors entered their game against the Woodstock Wasps already walking wounded. With starters Josiah Welch and Harry Molesworth and 6th man Finnegan O’Donnell injured, players and coaches alike knew the Raptors were in for a tough fight against a hungry Wasps squad seeking to notch their first win of the season.
But in the end, it was wounds of the self-inflicted variety that brought down the Raptors, as untimely turnovers and poor offensive execution led the Raptors to their first loss of their 2022-23 campaign.
The game started in sloppy fashion for both teams, as after a quick three pointer on each side, both offenses struggled to execute, with the two teams combining for seven turnovers to only 9 made shots in the first frame. The quarter could have been even worse for Rivendell if not for the stellar play of Jacoby Patterson. The guard scored eight of the Raptors eleven points, nailing two threes and converting a highlight-reel reverse layup that gave the Raptors an early advantage. Woodstock kept punching back, however, using their speed to attack Rivendell’s 2-2-1 zone press, then running in transition for easy layup opportunities.
With the Wasps holding a three-point advantage entering the second quarter, it felt as if a player on either side could make a couple of big plays to swing the game. Unfortunately for Rivendell, that player would be Woodstock’s Declan McCollough. The senior guard scored his team’s first seven points of the quarter, only interrupted by a Carter Bacon floater in what would turn out to be a five point swing for the Wasps. The lead expanded to nine points halfway through the quarter and expanded to eleven at halftime, helped by six Raptor turnovers and a dominant performance on the defensive glass that didn’t allow a Rivendell offensive rebound in the half.
The Third Quarter proved more positive for the Raptors, as improved defensive performance combined with a poor showing from the line for the Wasps helped an impressive clawback in the back-half of the period. After a quick 5-0 swing, a big Parker Piper putback cut the Woodstock lead to just seven points and left open the potential for a great finish in the final quarter.
This potential seemed to pay off, as a pair of free throws and a brilliant off-balance jumper from Derek Vogelien pulled the Raptors within just 4 points with 6 minutes to go. But off an unfortunate missed shot for Rivendell, Zach Matsolf-Tan nailed a three pointer from the corner to put Woodstock up by 7, a lead added to by a Ezra Lockhart putback just 15 seconds later. The Raptors refused to die, though, and several key Patterson buckets kept the game close, forcing the Wasps to go into a slow-paced offense to keep the ball from the relentless Raptors. Even despite this, the Raptors were within 5 points with just two and a half minutes remaining, and made it a one-score game after a great low-post move from Ashton Pierson. But even then, the Wasps had an answer, as McCollough sliced through the Raptor defense for a backbreaking layup. A Rivendell turnover on the possession after would seal the game, despite some late free throw exchanges.
Declan McCollough led all scorers with 22 points. Jacoby Patterson led the Raptors with a career-high 19 points on 71% true shooting. No other Raptors reached double figures.
Raptor coach Andrew Perkins was pleased with the effort his team showed, although he noted that his team was not ready for the tempo Woodstock showed. “We have to clean up ball protection a lot,” he said post-game, saying the priority will be ball security in the week’s remaining practices. Patterson agreed, and also noted some defensive lapses that gave the Wasps a strong free-throw advantage.
Rivendell is at Thetford next Monday, marking the first time in six years the Raptor boys have traveled to their closest rival.

ORFORD, NH- After a disappointing pair of results in preseason scrimmages and with two key players sidelined with injuries, some worried that Rivendell might start their 2022 campaign on a sour note. The Raptors silenced that thought as they jumped out to a large lead thanks to a relentless defensive performance and never looked back in a comfortable win.
The Raptors came out of the gate quick, scoring the game’s opening 7 points before a Solan Farmer floater gave the Minutemen their first bucket. But from there on, it was all Rivendell. Derek Vogelien hit a three-pointer while being fouled and converted the 4-point-play, then added two assists including an impressive bullet pass to Luke Avery as the Raptors scored 14 consecutive points to end the first quarter at 21-2.
After such a dominant quarter, Rivendell coach Andrew Perkins opted for a slower tempo, backing out of the 2-2-1 full-court press the Raptors had used effectively in the first quarter. From there, Rivendell maintained their advantage through dominant rebounding, with Parker Piper and Carter Bacon each hauling down 4 rebounds in the quarter. The first-half lead spiked to as much as 22 at the 4-minute mark and stayed around that number to the half, helped by a late pair of Mill River 3-pointers that finally pushed the Minutemen into double digits.
Raptors forward Ashton Pierson dominated the third frame, scoring eight of the team’s ten points in the quarter while grabbing five more rebounds in an exceptional performance. Pierson also spearheaded a great defensive quarter from Rivendell, as despite the team switching from their conventional 2-3 zone defense to a more aggressive man-to-man look, the Raptors held the Minutemen to a single make from the floor.
Mill River finally showed some life on offense in the 4th quarter, opening the period on a 5-0 run and outscoring the Raptor bench unit to reach a slightly more respectable final score.
Ashton Pierson and Derek Vogelien led the Raptors with 14 points each. Pierson also hauled in a career-best 13 rebounds for his first ever double-double performance. “I just go into every game with the goal to get as many rebounds as I can,” Pierson said post-game. “13 is pretty good.” he noted with a slight chuckle. Solan Farmer led Mill River with 14 points.
Coach Andrew Perkins was also pleased with Rivendell’s performance, praising the team’s depth in how the team has responded to the injuries that struck early this year. “Today was a good chance to practice some guys in positions they’re not familiar with- and it paid off.”
Rivendell returns on the 13th at home against Woodstock. “I expect them to be a pretty good test… they were a young team with potential and promise when we saw them last year.'' said Perkins of the matchup with the Wasps.
