Through conversations and lived experiences four Detroit-based theatre directors have created original performances pieces -- captured through the lens of a professional filmmaker responding to the question, "What do Detroiters have, want, and need from their city, state, and national leaders?"
Four young artists gather on Zoom to unpack the state of leadership in our city and nation in 2020-a year like no other. Developed from the original score for Sojourn's The Race, this piece combines found text, poetry, improvisation and the words of the Detroit community to ask what kind of person we want and deserve in a leader.

This interactive production was originally created by Sojourn Theatre and commissioned by Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. in 2008 as a way to use theatre to provide space for civic inquiry and dialogue. The original production ran the week before, and the week after, the 2008 Presidential election. It was again presented in 2016 at Arizona State University for one night only.
In 2019, Sojourn Theatre chose to make "THE RACE" available to any community wanting to produce the show in 2020. Matrix Theatre Company accepted Sojourn’s invitation, which included an offer of knowledge-sharing and logistical support between Sojourn and Matrix Theatre Company's 2020 production team.
For more information about "THE RACE" watch this video from Arizona State University's 2016 production featuring commentary from Sojourn Theatre founder, Michael Rohd.
