TOPIA is a multidisciplinary, role-play game designed for grades 6 to 12. Inspired by a short story, players develop their understanding of equity issues and the role of water in their lives by engaging in drama pedagogies. Then, players find themselves involved in a town experiencing a water tragedy. Each player takes on the role of a member of the community: e.g. parent, factory worker, business owner, elder, health inspector. Through a number of game structures, the group must work together to deal with the crisis. It becomes apparent that different priorities and points-of-view incite conflict. The group must work together toward a consensus to solve their problems. This role-playing game provides opportunities for participants to develop their understandings of science, geography, math, and communication skills.
