Downhill is the simplest form of alpine skiing. The skiers ski down a predetermined slope with minimal turns and try to have the maximum speed to reach the finish line. These skiers reach speeds of 80 miles per hour. Each competitor skis down the course once, and the fastest to cross the line first is deemed as the winner.
This is the fastest event in alpine skiing. The competitors ski down a slope that has a vertical descent of 180m to 220m for men and 140m to 180m for women. Skiers pass through two courses and one by one each person gets eliminated after each course based on timing. The skier with the lowest combined time across two courses is declared the winner.
Similar to slalom, it involves skiing down a slope while passing through gates by turning. The Vertical descent while skiing for men is 250-450m and 250m-400m for women. Each gate has a minimum width of 4m and a max of 8m. Each skier gets two runs down the slope and the winner is determined by the fastest cumulative time.
Super-G combines elements of downhill and slalom/giant slalom. Athletes ski down a slope similar to downhill achieving high speeds while passing through alternating red and blue gates like slalom. They also have to stay within the boundaries of the course, except in a few allowed spots. The veritcal drop of the slope is between 400-650m for men and 400-600m for women.
