With 33 years of experience in the classroom, I am a highly qualified geography tutor who can help students achieve the best possible grades at GCSE, IGCSE, A level, Scottish National 5 and Highers. I graduated with a First Class honours degree in Geography from the University of Leeds in 1990 and gained Qualified Teacher Status in 1991. I retired from classroom teaching in 2024 to concentrate on private tutoring.
My passion for Geography stems from my childhood growing up between the mountains and coast in North Wales. Being immersed in a complexity of different physical landscapes sparked a curiosity and desire to make sense of how the natural world has evolved and peoples’ relationship with it.
For over 30 years I was Head of Geography during which time I produced a wealth of teaching and learning resources aimed at students of all abilities. I have taught GCSE and A level Geography throughout my career developing strategies to make the content accessible as well as enjoyable for all. My style of teaching is one that tends to focus on visual, physical and tactile approaches to learning, but I will adapt to the needs of individual students. I have a thorough understanding of the exam system gained through years of examining at both levels across a range of exam boards.
I have a particular passion for fieldwork having planned and led fieldcourses for GCSE and A level students both in the UK and overseas. For those that need it, I can offer guidance in the planning of fieldwork investigations, including the NEA at A level for both students and teachers alike. I have particular knowledge of both human and physical geography fieldwork locations in Dorset, the North Norfolk coast, the Peak District, Snowdonia, the Yorkshire Dales, Scotland, Iceland and Morocco.
I have a proven track record of exam success with students achieving well above the national average in top grades, both at GCSE and A level.
Lessons are available either face-to-face or online. For areas served by face-to-face tutoring see the map on the One-to-One tutoring page. Online lessons are available for students across the UK and overseas and are delivered via Zoom. Lessons last typically 1 hour, although longer or shorter sessions can be requested. Lessons typically focus on exam preparation, helping with particular concepts or providing a complete GCSE, National 5, A level or Highers course.
I offer an initial consultation either in-person or on Zoom free of charge. Subsequent lessons will be invoiced after each lesson. The lesson fee includes all marking and preparation, support between lessons and resource materials.
