Modern Civil Rights Movement- The latin word modern translates as "just now" and is derived from modo. The next latin word used in this definition is civil which translates as "citizen" and is derived from civis. The next word, right, originates from the germanic or european origin. The word right is "considered proper, correct, or consonant with justice or related issues". The last word used in this definition is movement, which also originates from latin, and is derived from movere. Movement means "to move". All these words together, create the Modern Civil Rights Movement, which aims towards giving all people within a society their natural born rights. These rights not only being the right to vote or own property, but also the right to not be discriminated against. When using this term, the word modern comes in to indicate the time period is focusing on the 1950-1960's. People use this term to explain the United States' history, and most people if not all use this term.

Little Rock Nine- The germanic word little means "small", and is derived from luttel. The next word, rock is derived from medieval Latin word rocca, and is a solid mineral. The last word, nine, is derived from "negen", and is equivalent to products less than eight, or products of three, and three. All of these words together create the "Little Rock Nine". The little rock nine represents nine african american high school students in Little Rock, Arkansas. These nine students, enrolled to an all white school called Central High School; the little rock nine would be the first african americans to be students at Central High. People started using this term in September 1957, when the Little Rock Nine began to go to their new school. Our society uses this term to remember these children, and how they changed education. Socially, this term is looked down upon by anyone opposing the segregation of schools, however it is favored amongst people who agree segregation is unconstitutional. Overall, this term is favored by most, because it shows how courageous these nine students were, and how the United States would not be where it is without them. Lastly, this term affects african americans the most because it is their history, and ancestors who made these strides.
Race mixing- The northern english word, race, is derived from ras. The late middle english word, mixing is derived from mix. In this context, the word race will refer to someone's self identification with one or more social groups, and the word mixing is several social groups together. The phrase, race mixing became very popular during the 1950's because people against the integration of schools would create signs using this term, and protest outside the schools. People use this term to establish its not just one race at a particular place, or event however it is several races at these places. This word affects every audience, but it had been primarily associated with african americans, and caucasians.

Integration- The origin of integration is derived from integrat. The latin word, integrat- means to be "made whole". Throughout this website, the word, integration refers to two different races of people who were previously separate, but are now together. This word can be found when discussing the school system after the Brown v Board of Education court decision.

Racial Segregation- Segregation is derived from the latin word segregatus, which means to be "set apart". The definition of the term racial is " of, relating to, or based on a race". When both words are placed together, racial segregation means to restrict certain groups of people from certain areas or events, based on their race. Racial segregation has historically been used to keep one race of people socially, and economically ahead of the other by containing the other race. This phase has become increasingly common since the Modern Civil Rights Movement. Ever since the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which advocated against racial segregation, racial segregation has not been permitted.
Racial Equity- The word equity is derived from the word aequus. The origin of equity comes from latin, and means equal. When dealing with racial equity, it means to give everyone an equal opportunity to succeed with no racial bias. When people do not have an equal opportunity, it means given them additional resources to put them on the same platform as those that have additional tools. Therefore, racial equity is when people who are usually behind, are given additional resources to put them at the same place or they are given the same opportunity.

Equality- The latin word equality is derived from the word aequalis. The origin of equality means equal. Equality is when one acknowledges that everyone has same rights regardless of their culture, ethnicity or race. When achieving equality, everyone has the same opportunities. The difference between equality, and equity is equity gives people who are at a disadvantage additional tools in order to succeed.
Brown v Board Of Education- Brown v Board of Education is a U.S supreme court decision which ruled that segregation in the school system is unconstitutional. During the 1950's, schools around the U.S but more specifically in Topeka, Kansas were segregated. In correlation, children had to go to specific schools based on their race. This caused children having to travel further to attend their school, when schools were available closer. Due to the role of the NAACP, thirteen parents came forward to fight the inequality found in the school system. These parents applied to schools that were closer to their homes, however were denied on basis of their race. After several trials, Brown v Board of Education won due to the fact it demonstrated how schools who are "separate but equal" are not equal.

Achievement Gap- The middle french word achievement is known as an " act of completing something". The middle english word gap is derived from the word gape. Gap means a break or a space between two objects or things. When placing these two words together, they create the achievement gap. The achievement gap is commonly used when describing the school system since integration. Schools that have predominantly minorities are often underfunded or lack the same resources found in other schools. The schools that have these resources are usually mainly white or the middle class. Due to some schools having better resources, this is causing the achievement gap to be higher in the United States. This in return, is causing researchers to believe "racial inequality is a serious education problem in the United States" (Rowley, and Wright 93).
