Known by many names as the masked god, such as Bacchus, Bromius, and Evius, as well as the only Olympian with a mortal mother, is Dionysus. Just as he has many names, he was the god of many things including wine, ecstasy, theatre, fertility, ritual madness, and chaos. Because of wine being a huge part of Greek culture, Dionysus was very highly worsipped. He was a god of the people, teacing them the ways of the vine, how to make wine, and often partying and letting loose with those who followed him. He was kind to the people, but could get harsh if absolutely necessary. 

Speaking of doubt, the pirates weren't the only ones to doubt Dionysus and him being a god. There's a tale of a man named Pentheus who mocked him and his followers, and refused to hear Dionysus out when trying to explain his worship. Pentheus, blinded by whose own emotions and ignorance, played a hand into his own death. Dionysus and his followers, two of which were Pentheus' own mother and sister, were drunk and singing on top of a hill, which in turn irritated Pentheus. He tred to have his guards imprison the loud and obnoxious worshippers despite Teiresias' warning, only to find their ropes wouldn't stay, and the cells remained unlocked. The guards brought the god to Pentheus, a cousin of Dionysus who wasn't aware of the god's existence. As he tried to explain what was happening, Pentheus shut him out and refused to hear wat he was saying due to his own anger and annoyance, so Dionysus gave up on him and left him to his downfall. Pentheus went to find the group of worshippers again, but Dionysus had drove them to insanity. Upon seeing Pentheus, they didn't see him as the person he was, but instead a savage mountain lion. It was at this point Pentheus realized he screwed up and was in fact dealing with an immortal being, which he was now going to pay for with his life. His mother was the first to reach him, tearing his head from his body, as his sister and the other followers tore him limb for limb.
