Nationwide statistics agree that up to 50% of preschool-aged children are not prepared to succeed in kindergarten. Research also shows that children supported by strong networks of caregivers and resources have a better chance of being ready for this important social and academic transition.
The Learning Neighborhood is all about developing and empowering an intentional community of adults — be they parents, educators, or family, friend, and neighbor caregivers — with tools and strategies to support the emotional and educational well-being of the children in their lives. Our goal is that all children enter kindergarten ready to succeed. In the pilot phase of our program, we're experimenting with a constellation of strategies for building learning neighborhoods around 3-and-4-year-olds that foster critical social-emotional learning (SEL), build connections across school and home environments, and help support equity in kindergarten readiness across local communities. While PBS and CfC provided the foundations of play-based content and SEL curriculum, KLRN served as an ideal partner for the Learning Neighborhood pilot, as the pilot leveraged its existing family Play & Learn program, its experience with Bright by Text messaging implementation, and its experience with PBS KIDS Edcamp, as well as other local community initiatives already underway. KLRN is also positioned to engage in higher-level strategic collaboration and leadership based on its connections with community organizations like the United Way of San Antonio & Bexar County and local connections to military families.
