Empathy Celebration

Bringing Families Together

An Empathy Celebration event was produced by KLRN staff, in coordination with three community volunteer groups (Kohl’s, John Jay High School, and Junior League of San Antonio).

To support the activities, two Bexar County Sheriff Officers acted as security, four partnering agencies (ReadyKidSA, UnitedWay of San Antonio & Bexar County, Center for Healthcare Services, and Clarity Child Guidance Center), a family therapeutic yoga teacher, and a percussionist shared their talents and resources. Families from both the Play & Learn and the school & center programs joined together to participate in a variety of learning activities in a fun environment.

Elements of the Celebration

The event was hosted at the Granthamm Gathering Center at the TriPoint YMCA. The location was selected as it was equidistant for families to travel to from different points of the city and it had the capacity to host a large group.
KLRN organized 21 unique activities- with an SEL focus- for families to enjoy during the event. The team leveraged resources from PBS KIDS and CfC and activities ranged from: Many Feelings Faces (creating facial expressions using PlayDoh), to Brain Builders, to Matching Feelings (using images from Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood to match them with words that describe the feelings depicted in the image), Making Valentine's Day Cards, and decorating their own Listening Ears.
Esther, a family therapeutic yoga teacher hosted a 20-minute live demonstration that included: a welcome, settling in exercises, breathing techniques, moving along with yoga poses, meditation, and closing exercises.
TamboRhythms instructor, Jorge, hosted a 30-minute group drumming circle with enough percussion instruments for all attendees. Through the interactive program, families practiced listening and executive functioning skills.
Daniel Tiger from Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood made special appearances taking photographs with the audience. The families also co-viewed You Are Special from Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood.
