Vayu, the Avatar

Author's Note: This story is based off Vayu, the Lord of Wind. Lord Vayu was very respected and loved by people eveywhere. He traveled all around the universe but specifically, he was the guardian of the north-west direction. Also, he was best known for being part of the holy triad, along with Varuna and Agni. Although he was loved, he was very violent and did not think twice about his actions since he had a terrible temper. I decided to incorporate Vayu's life into the show Avatar the Last Airbender by having him represent Aang's character. Although I'll be following the overall plot of the show, I wanted to incorporate Vayu's personality into Aang's character. I thought it would be fun to switch up the details of specific scenes from the show so that my own touch would be able to shine through. Also, although this specific story doesn't incorporate much airbending, which is Vayu's most powerful skill, the rest of the stories will show off more of his airbending skills. I decided to make this first story more about the discovery of him being the avatar to create a good foundation to start off the storybook. That way as the storybook grows, readers will be able to follow along as Vayu grows up, allowing readers to fall in love with his character and backstory.

Darkness. Everything was dark but suddenly, there was so... much… light.

My eyes opened briefly to unexpectedly brilliant, white, reflecting light. Before I had a chance to react, my mind went dizzy and darkness took hold. When I opened my eyes again, I found myself staring into the warmest brown eyes. They were scared but welcoming.

“Wh-Who are you?” I asked fearfully but more curious than anything.

“I’m Varuna and this is my brother Saka.”

She smiled at me softly and her voice sounded like a beautiful melody being carried in the wind. Her soft smile quickly disappeared with perplexity.

“But who are you…? And what were you doing trapped in that iceberg?" She pointed to the enormous iceberg behind me, which was now cracked and crumbled.

Varuna's words woke me from the daze I was in.

"I WAS TRAPPED IN AN ICEBERG!?" I shouted out as I jumped onto my feet.

Varuna touched my back with a look of worry in her eyes. "Are you okay? Do you remember who you are?"

I turned my head looking at all the ice and water around me. Where was I? How long was I trapped in that iceberg? What's going on? My thoughts were like a tornado spinning in my head. I needed to figure out what happened. I needed to concentrate. Who was I? Who am I? Who- ... and then I remembered.

"Vayu," I whispered.

"What did he say?" Saka asked as he looked at Varuna.

I lifted my head and looked at them both.

"Vayu. My name is Vayu," I took a big breath and let it out, "and I'm the avatar."

"...The avatar?" Varuna repeated back in shocked. She looked at Saka, both of them speechless. Then she giggled and before I know it, they're both hunched over with laughter.

"HA! The avatar? Yeah good one," Saka said as he wiped a tear from his eye.

I stood there confused. Why didn't they believe me? And why were they laughing at me!? My nervousness quickly turned into anger as Saka and Varuna continued to laugh.

"I'm being serious!" I shouted back furiously.

"Oh sure you are," Saka teased.

I could feel my face get hot as my blood began to race.

"Yes. I. AM!!!" As I screamed I held up my arms on both sides and two enormous tornados exploded from my hands, shattering the icebergs around us.

Varuna and Saka immediately stopped laughing and stared in shock and fear as they quickly realized that I wasn't lying.

"I can't believe it," Varuna whispered. "All the airbenders were wiped out by the fire nation 100 years ago." Varuna's shock slowly turned into awe and she smiled, "You... You really are the avatar."
