Introduction

“Avatar the Last Airbender” is the name of an older Nickelodeon cartoon. This storybook is a combination of Avatar the Last Airbender and stories from the Ramayana. Although the plot of this storybook will follow the one of Avatar the Last Airbender, I will be using specific details and story lessons from the book of Ramayana. I decided to follow this format because this show was one of my favorite shows growing up. Due to this, this show has a special place in my heart because it reminds me of my childhood. Additionally, this storybook will be organized chronologically and each story will be told from a different bender's point of view. I decided to do this because I want to give each bender a chance to tell their own story. They are each so different, not just in their powers, but in their personalities as well, and I believe it’s important that readers are given the chance to see that.

I decided to use Avatar the Last Airbender as my overall theme because I admire the show's storytelling. Also, the show contains avatars personifying elements that are also present in Indian traditions. Indian religion believes in 5 basic elements: water, air, fire, earth and space. However, because the element space is not part of the show Avatar the Last Airbender, it will not be included in this storybook. In Indian religion, Agni is the God of Fire, Varuna is the God of Water, Bhumi is the goddess of Earth and Vayu is the Lord of Wind. Thus, it makes sense to represent Agni as a firebender, Varuna as a waterbender, Bhumi as an earthbender and Vayu as an airbender. Even though I'm changing the names, the characters themselves won't be changed from the original story. The only difference between this story and Avatar the Last Airbender will be names of the characters and specific scenes.
