Kurdish Dialects
and resources
and resources
The Kurdish language is a rich and diverse branch of the Indo-Iranian family, spoken by millions Kurds across the Middle East. Rather than one unified language, Kurdish is made up of several dialects. The biggest dialects consist of:
Kurmanci (Northern Kurdish): The most widely spoken dialect, used in all Bakur, Bashur, Rojava and Rojhilat. It is written in the Latin script and is prominent in diaspora communities.
Sorani (Central Kurdish): Common in Bashur and Rojhilat, Sorani uses a modified Arabic script and holds official status in the Kurdistan Region.
Pehlewani (Southern Kurdish): Spoken in parts of Bashur and Rajhilat especially among Feyli Kurds, this dialect remains largely oral and less institutionalised.
Zazaki & Gorani: Though structurally different, these languages are historically tied to Kurdish heritage and are spoken by communities in Bashur & Rojhilat.
Despite these differences, all dialects form a vital part of Kurdish identity and cultural resilience. However, due to centuries of colonisation, forced assimilation, and cultural suppression by dominant nation-states, Kurdish dialects are now less widely spoken. Despite this, Kurdish remains a powerful symbol of identity, resistance, and cultural continuity. For this reason i will be dedicating this page to resouces that can be used to learn Kurdish.
