Kerbichthys is a large genus of Kerbinian fish, and is among the most, if not THE most, common representatives of this group, both in terms of the number of individuals as a whole, and the number of species within this genus. It is almost ubiquitous among Piscata, the clade where most Kerbinian fish belong to. There are around 40 species in this genus. Many of the species within this genus look unlike the type species, Kerbichthys vulgaris. However, in terms of functional biology, and their genomes, all these types of fish are most closely related to each other than to all other Kerbinian fish. The fish in this genus are found everywhere on Kerbin, and range anywhere from 45 to 80 cm long. Their relatively dissimilar physiologies have allowed Kerbichthys to fill almost every niche of generalists the sea has to offer. Many of the species are omnivorous, like the type species K vulgaris (Pictured top left). Those species will feed on anything they can fit into their mouths, and/or throats. Other species mostly go for smaller fish and vertebrates. One of these species is K monostomonychus (Pictured bottom left), also known as the Kerbolisk. This mostly white species has a large front tooth which was eventually been co-opted into a claw, which gives it its name. This species is among the most predatorial. A few large species, like K maximus (Pictured bottom right), can be facultative filter feeders, due to their large size, similar to other convergently evolved fish. The species K craterensis is among the most herbivorous of the genus, feeding on mostly the aquatic plants around the crater. Kerbichthys are often eaten by a large number of organisms, due to their abundance, These species are also of large commercial importance to the Kerbals, as they help to provide the source of fish. Overfishing has caused most species to become rare, despite the genus's abundance. The niches of those forms, in many locations, have been taken up by convergently evolved Kerbichthyids.
