Research Statement

This project aims to pioneer a transformative industry in Louisiana by cultivating microalgae and producing high-value biomedical compounds using local resources and LSU-developed technology.  

As unicellular photosynthetic organisms, microalgae provide a sustainable platform for CO₂ conversion into diverse bioactive compounds, leveraging light energy. With the global microalgae industry valued at $1.2 billion in 2023 and projected to reach $25.7 billion by 2033, there is substantial market potential for expansion within the U.S., where established operations exist in Hawaii, California, New Mexico, and Texas.

Louisiana presents an ideal environment for microalgae cultivation, offering favorable climate conditions, abundant land and water resources, and robust industrial infrastructure. Despite these advantages, the state has yet to develop a microalgae-based industry, presenting a unique opportunity for this project to establish Louisiana as a leader in this high-growth sector.

Beyond economic impact, this initiative addresses critical public health challenges. Louisiana has some of the nation’s highest rates of inflammatory diseases, including asthma, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Microalgae-derived bioactive compounds have demonstrated promising therapeutic effects against these conditions, offering significant health benefits for the state’s population. By leveraging LSU’s cutting-edge technology and Louisiana’s natural and industrial assets, this project seeks to drive both economic growth and public health advancements in the region.
