About
The Kato Lab investigates how cells respond to environmental factors using microalgae and plants. Our research integrates a diverse array of techniques, including cellular assays, genetic modification, biochemical analyses, light microscopy, luminescence technlogy, 3D printing, and mathematical modeling.
...
Beyond fundamental research, we are dedicated to applied science with a focus on sustainability and biomedical innovation. A major initiative aims to establish a microalgae-based industry in Louisiana by repurposing salt-intruded rice fields for large-scale microalgae cultivation. These microalgae are cultivated to produce medically relevant compounds, which are extracted and purified for therapeutic applications. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we utilize the remaining biomass to develop biodegradable Mardi Gras beads made from bio-based materials—an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic beads.
...
We also explore the therapeutic potential of these natural compounds in treating human diseases such as asthma, employing cultured human cells and mouse models to assess their efficacy.
...
Through interdisciplinary research and innovation, the Kato Lab strives to advance both scientific discovery and real-world solutions that benefit human health and the environment.
