This is the 2nd year for the Johnstown Community in the SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition and in September they received word that they've won their first 'Endeavour' Award. This is a great achievement for the team and everyone involved.
What makes for a Winning Entry isn't really as important as getting the support and encouragement from the Local Community to go forward and make improvements that everyone wants.

Some of the most recent improvements were simple things like seeing green spaces maintained and not seeing as much litter blowing around the streets.

The wonderful summer flower baskets on St Martha's (Ardboyne) Bridge and the fair weather events like the Dog Day in the Park in June were well received by residents and visitors to our area.

Businesses such as Taylors of Johnstown, Johnstown Shopping Centre, Crew Barbers and High Maintenance in Old Johnstown Village all gained a favourable mention in the Judges reports for the extra efforts they made in making their premises attractive.

It appears that the Judges visited in June just after the long grass of Johnstown Wood was cut and before the summer drought impacted on the planting of shrubs.

Of 16 proposed project areas the majority were for ongoing consideration depending on future funding and local support. The images highlight the projects undertaken.

Reading the Judges report doesn't highlight anything significantly negative and it praises some of the groups ambitions. The points awarded score Johnstown at nearly 50% and to reach the points awarded to Trim with a similar population will require a huge effort from the entire community.

What the small founding group already know is that it takes volunteers to suggest improvement ideas and then more volunteers to gather helping hands to make these suggestions happen.

Meath County Council provided huge support in helping the group with improvement projects and the Dog Day Event but it is local community volunteers that is really missing.

When residents and visitors notice the difference it makes it worthwhile. When independent judges make an award it signals the team really are on the right track.
